1989 Ford Orion body leaks - bob dryden
I'm tracing rain water leaks on my wifes Orion 1600cc Auto. but these two have got me stumped ! !
Ive wallpapered the interior of the boot with newspaper and I find after persistant light rain with the car stationary, quite a lot of water appears on the inner vertical sides of the boot. That is, starting within the metal guards where the swinging arms of the two hinges rotate. Ive also traced a small leak [a slow weep] coming through the rubber sealing strip which secures the rear windscreen but that is very slight and I think it is diverting me away from the correct area to investigate. I wondered if it may be some water coming in via the sun roof well? There appears to be only one drainage hole on either side at the front end, coupled up to the plastic tubes which emerge on the inner sides of the rear panels near to the rear wheels. Ive checked that water flows through okay via a watering can. But I wondered if there is also drainage holes at the rear of the sun roof well? Which may have disconnected. If that is so God knows how one could reconnect them. These drain tubes are not mentioned in my Haynes Manual so perhaps they dont give any trouble? I really should get rid of the car, but it runs well, has got hand controls for my wifes disability and she wont change it. regards, Bob Dryden.

Could be condensation Bob, if on vertical sides. When I was a youngster, and knew no better, I was put in the boot with a torch whilst someone hosepiped the car. Is your wife fairly small, or have you children?......

To Mike Harvey,
I suspect your advice is the closest solution yet. Also I've made the condensation problem worse because I've stripped the side walls, boot and rear parcel shelf of all coverings down to the bare painted metal finish, thus positively encouraging condensation. Its really weird. Where the two wheel arches can be seen inside the boot there are two recessed wells which you would think would trap and hold the condensed water, but they are as dry as a bone. All the leaks occour when the car is stationary. It has not been out on the road for months. Thanks for your help, and of course for the help I have had from all the other willing helpers at the Backroom Forum. Some of their suggestions may also be valid. regards Bob Dryden.mike harvey wrote:

Clamp your fingers around the wheelarch, palm uppermost and squeeze hard. Repaet this all the way around the wheelarch. If you feel the inner arch give way at any point, that's the source of your leak.

Re: 1989 Ford Orion body leaks - bob dryden
Dear Honest John,
Have done as you have suggested. There does not appear to be any 'give' in the inner arches but there is a tell tale rust line where the wheel arches and outer skins join together. When looked at inside the boot . Thank you for your help.

Hasn't got a rear wing mounted aerial has it?
Re: 1989 Ford Orion body leaks - bob dryden
Good idea Marc, but no, I think the aerial, is built in the rear windscreen.
Thanks for your suggestion.

HJ is right - rust will be the enemy of this car. Sorry.

Re: 1989 Ford Orion body leaks - bob dryden
Hi David !
You are absolutely right about the general rust problem. I had the battery tray cut out and replaced earlier on. Which cured water leaks in the front foot well.
What I can't understand is , as the water shows internally above the wheel arches and the car has been stationary for over a month, Its not as if the water has been driven in whilst driving through puddles. Any other suggestions will be much appreciated. regards Bob Dryden. David Lacey wrote:

Re: 1989 Ford Orion body leaks - Michael
Bob, you may have already solved the problem. Do not underestimate the amount of water that will enter the car via a leaking rear window seal. The paper is absorbing much of the water and may be confusing you. Try again, with less paper and, ideally, someone in the boot with a torch.
Re: 1989 Ford Orion body leaks - bob dryden
Thanks a bundle Michael !
This is encouraging. Today I found a leak induced rust line [now dry] starting inside the lower part of the windscreen sealing strip. Disappearing into the double skinned panel [where I can't get at it] and re-emerging on to my wet newspaper . Which is stuck on to the vertical inner surface. I'm going to get the window seals renewed. Then check it again. Will inform you later of the results. Thanks again for your advice its really appreceated.
