No, you get my vote. My older brother is a firearms officer, recently transferred to Heathrow, so this kind of thing tends to bring the nature of his job home all too clearly.
Let us know if there is news of a fund being opened for the family?
No specific fund set up at this stage. If anyone has details of an appropriate benevolent society please feel free to post details or a link.

Don't want to get on high horse here, but this I am afraid is typical of today's attitude. As soon as something tragic happens, as in this case, our society's answer is to donate money! Does this make things better? Of course it doesn't.
Now I am not aware of the compensation scheme etc but I would imagine that the family of a policeman who is brutally murdered whilst at work will receive substantial compensation in the way of death benefit, life insurance, pension etc. I am in no way, and I reiterate that, in no way, saying that this will make up for the loss of a loved one, however, I don't think in this instance any extra money over and above the police compensation will do anyone any favours.
In the Welsh mining disaster, and also recently with the Dunblane attrocity, everyone, especially the press, were tripping over each other to set up funds. 10 years on, much of this money is still tied up due to legalities as to what it has to be actually used for.
If anyone feels the need to donate money, I would suggest they give it to a local cause that they know themselves can make good use of it.
I know this is an emotional subject and my heart goes out to the family, especially at this time of the year, but I don't believe that knee-jerk reactions help either!

BobbyG,
I kind of know what you are trying to say here, but I think that wanting to help someone in their time of excruciating need is slightly different from them receiving compensation.
I am appalled by the shooting of this policeman and, if a link is provided to enable me to donate to a fund in his memory then I shall be doing so.
His poor widow is in pieces now and is probably feeling alone and scared to hell and back again as to how she'll manage now. If, by donating a few pounds in her husband's memory, we can restore a little of her faith in human nature, as well as cover this quarter's gas bill, then where is the harm in that? People gain great strength in their time of need from the realisation that complete strangers are on their side and want to help.
Let's not deny society that, eh?
My condolonces to the policeman's widow and family.

Why capital punishment only for Police Officers? A coppers life is no more sacred than yours or mine. Hang all murderers.

I live about three miles from where this happened. There can be no doubt that people who are prepared to murder other human beings who represent the community at large, do not deserve to live.
My other encounter with people who have no regard for their fellow human beings, but at a much lesser level happened to my son on Christmas night (in Bradford), when two low lives put his drivers window through. He has fitted an alarm and so they didn't steal anything, but were seen to saunter off in a nonchalant manner. I have just spent two hours trying to source a second hand replacement.
Sorry to be a doom and gloom merchant.

Apparantly the car has been found.

According to newspaper he is white, stocky build with olive/tanned skin. I know what I'm thinking but really hope I'm wrong.
This is not a criticism of the officers involved but the paper says the suspect was in the rear of the police car prior to being cuffed when he shot them. Don't know what the official police procedure is but if it isn't the case already I think it may now be time for a 'handcuffs first, ask questions later policy' as they seem to have in USA. These people don't play by any rules and we have to start acting accordingly.
Sincere condolences to the families involved and let's hope the injured PC makes a full and quick recovery.

Firstly, I must add my condolences to the family of the officer concerned who was just carrying out his everyday duty trying to keep the world a safer place for yours and mine.

In the light of this incident I think we need to remember that sometimes we may be treated a little more brusquely by the BiB than perhaps we might feel is justified but there is almost certainly always a reason. If an officer feels a situation is 'not right' then I think we have to respect that for his own safety he may act differently than he would otherwise. It is a job I, for one, do not envy.

For those that are interested, the reward is being backed by the Police Memorial fund (think that's it's name) which, for some reason, is fronted by Michael Winner.

Thanks PG. Here's a link to the Trust.

I think it's fronted by him 'cos he founded it. I'm not sure but seem to recall it was after the death of PC Yvonne Fletcher in London.

Well, is it just me but I have no idea what you could be thinking. Maybe I am just being stupid, I just don't understand.

If you follow the link I posted above you will see that the fund is as much about paying tribute to those that put their lives on the line to protect our society as it is about payment to widows.
Over 50 police officers have been killed in the course of duty since the 80's. The memorial trust has been set up to remind people of the price paid for public protection.
Perhaps if a few more people were aware of the risks taken by our emergency services there would be a little more respect towards them.
Just my two penn'orth.

We can't handcuff people until they have been arrested. This guy was being checked out in the back of the car. I do this dozens of time every working day, I could imagine the posts if I handcuffed everybody before talking to them. Even with cars that are reported stolen, there are often mistakes on PNC or the driver has innocently purchased it. As much as it would make my life easier, the likes of 'Liberty' would have a field day and I'd be down the job centre.
My thoughts are with the guys family, but rest asured, the offender will be caught.

Another Illegal Immigrant from Eastern Europe? Well, could be difficult to find if not on any records and operating under a multitude of false identities. It's an interesting fact that bar one, the last 8 Police officers killed on duty were all killed by non-indigenous people.

Mods,
Heading in a non-motoring direction now, suggest deleting or locking.
|
Reports say the car was found not far from where it was taken, and as the original question was asking for people to look out for the car, This thread has been write locked as it is not for us to be judge and jury. Making comments about what should happen to him once arrested, his upbringing, his social background, ect, do not fall into the criteria of a motoring discussion forum.

Just watched the live press conference on BBC - they have a name and a photograph of an American citizen they would like to interview in connection with the murder and two attempted murders.
