My wife came home from WI and said she couldn`t get in the car! I discovered (by unlocking the driver`s door with the key) that as well as the driver door the opposite rear won`t unlock either. Also the windows no longer open, the wing mirrors don`t respond and the filler cap won`t unlock. Has anyone out there had experience of this? The Audi Centre said "Well it`s driveable". Until it needs diesel that is.

I think you have a major electrical fault here.
Possibly a body controller unit failure, seems favourable.
Have you checked the fuses?

If the A2 uses CAN then it could be a CAN failure (Audi have had CAN problems on their A6 vehicles).
It *could* be a fuse, but I doubt all of those items are on a single fuse.

They told me at tha Audi centre that it wasn`t a fuse. What is CAN? Thanks for your respones.

CAN stands for Controller Area Network and is a communications format between the various modules on the vehicle - you may have the ABS, engine management, immobiliser, steering, etc "talking" to each other passing data and diagnostics information.
Not sure about the Audi but some manufacturers were looking at using CAN with just power connections to local modules on the vehicle. The local modules could be such as the lighting at the rear, door modules controlling central locking, window,etc.

Correct me if wrong but that was a system BMW have been working on.I gather it has been in use for some time.not sure of car`s that have it fitted.But gather it use`s radio frequency transmission between component`s rather than cables.Not a bad idea but has been open to discussion as far as how it is affected by outside influences ie mobile phone transmitters.being the transmiter/reciever is on a similar frequency.Also the system can be immobilised by the mobile phone network as I say I may be barking up the wrong tree here.just a thought.but I assume it is the way thing`s are going

No, it will be CANbus connecting the communications - it's only two wires and will be cheaper than RF. The only product on a car that I know of that use RF for communications are the tyre pressure monitoring systems.
You are right, though. Local modules with just four wires is a lot easier to install and lighter in cabling

CAN has been around a long time (it was originally developed for connecting CNC machine tools in factory environments). There are other standards too, like VAN and K-BUS.
CAN was first used on 1992-on S-class and is now in quite a few cars (mostly German). Audi use CAN on late A6 (and maybe A4 and A2 as well?). Its a two-wire 'multi-master' bus system.

Got my A2 back today. Quote from bill "Rectified poor connection on central control unit". Cost me £209.24!
