i was gona change the cam belt and water pump this week but its too cold,i got no access to hard road or drives, problem is water pump is leaking like a sieve, now wot i was gona do was just change the water pump , lock the engine , relax the belt then quickly change water pump for new one sealed n gasketed, then tension the belt belt,is this the correct method for a bodge job until the winter passes and i can use my yard.another problem i got is power steering is sluggish when turning in low revs i.e parking.engine has done 195,000 is it worth changing the engine as car is in great nick and could last me another 3 to 5 years bodywork wise.

Don't skimp the job; you WILL regret it.
A cambelt change on your XUD engine will set you back £99 inc parts, labour & VAT somewhere not far from me.
A water pump is £40 tops......plus another hour (at the most!) labour. The theres three litres of antifreeze, say £10.
Is it really worth taking the 'risk'? Thought not.

£99? I'm bringing mine round next time DL and not scraping my knuckles for 5 hours (or are Xantiae more awkward??).
Anyway I'm pretty sure that in order to get the waterpump out the only thing that won't need to be done is actually remove the belt from the sprockets as everything else (engine mount, crank pulley, cambelt covers) will have to come off to access it.
No shortcut for this job unfortunately!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I had to battle down to £250 for a cambelt change on a 306 with the same engine from an independent in Watford - Peugeot next door wanted £380!
£99 sounds like a superb deal if it's true
|
Yup, it's a real price!
When do you want to come down??

Peugeot main dealer in Wellingborough quoted £220 for cambelt on a 306DT (with air, not sure that makes a difference). Then, of course, they found that the water pump was leaking - while I was a work, so I had no option but to get that changed as well. Total cost £310. Every car I've had the cambelt changed on has 'needed' a new water pump. Is this coincidental?

On my old L-reg Astra I got a cam belt change (1.6i Auto) for £65 at the local dealer.
And sorry to be pedantic, but is a proper grasp of English too much to ask for?
|
No, sorry mate, I'm not having a laugh.
Oh well, you try and help.......

And by the time you have finished trying to get at all the bits and bolts around the timing belt end + the intercooler pipes and lifted the engine up and down having removed the engine mount you'd wished you had paid £180!!!!!!!!

I have had my pug 306TD belt changed twice at 60k intervals.
I supplied belt, and my local garage charged me around £50 for their labour!

Whereabouts in the UK are you based, Solara and DL?
Hopefully many many miles from me, or i'll be green with envy!
