Rover 420SDI Turbo, Fuel starvation - Helz
Please can anyone help me.
I have a Rover 420 SDI Turbo, and when excellerating, the car is spluttering like an old goat on fags!
The hand fuel pump under the bonnet had callopsed, took it to a garage Tuesday, had it replaced, seemed fine for 24 hours until i got it on the motorway, then started spluttering again.
Checked under the bonnet, hand fuel pump collapsed again.
Today i have dropped the fuel tank, checked inside, clean as a whistle!
One of the fuel pipes from the tank was full of plastic and general crap, this has been replaced!
All breathers are clear.
Removed return pipe, checked and totally clear.
Blew through fuel system, again no apparent problems.
All pipes seem to be clear running from and to tank, but the hand pump collapses as soon as i start the engine only allowing enough fuel to tick over, as soon as i drive i am lucky to get to 2K revs!
I have thought maybe the diaphram in hand pump has callopsed totally due to the pressure it was under due to blockage in pipe from fuel tank, so i plan to replace this tomorrow.
Have also been told that it is possible that i may need a new tank all together! But i have removed pipes and there are no problems getting fuel from the tank, does anyone have any further suggestions i need my car fixed for Monday..

Thank-you

Not heard of this before!

My only suggestion is to try running the car with the fuel filler cap loose, to allow air into the tank.

Done that already, thanks anyway.

When it does it, try releasing the fuel cap, is there a whoosh noise?

Just gone out, checked under bonnet the hand fuel pump is inflated...
Started engine, deflates immediately...
Opened fuel cap.... no whoosh noise......

There has to be a blockage on the supply side.

Has the fuel line been confirmed clear by reverse blowing it with compressed air? If it has, and it was OK for 24hrs, then I would suggest you have something in the tank obstructing the pickup.

Saw this on a 1993 Maestro TD, which would run for 7 miles or so then cut out, restarting after 15 minutes or so. After much head scratching we eventually found a paper parts label inside which was blocking the pickup pipe at times, causing the engine to stop.

We removed the fuel pipe from the tank, so when we blew down the line, the rubbish would not go back into the tank if there was any, someone i know with a machine blow the fuel line from under the bonnet, the only thing that came out from under the car was fuel, and it was completely clear.
However, i am told that the hand fuel pump should be a one way flow system, we removed the pipe that goes to the fuel filter, (which has also been replaced about a month ago) and blew back, i heard bubbles in the tank from blowing, this is why i think the hand pump needs replacing again.
Driving home last night, i live about 12 miles away from where we were working on the car, like you said, got about 3 miles away from home and it really struggled, didn't quite cut out, but went really slow, i pulled over, then pulled off again, still sluggish, but it got me home.
I am going to replace the hand pump once again today, failing that i do have a tank i picked up from a Rover breakers yard that can be used. Just thought if it didn't need replacing then i could get my money back but everyone seems baffled.

What a performance but fingers crossed, new hand fuel pump, replaced fuel pipe and all going well.

Thanks DL for your help earlier.

Hand primer replaced? I guess it could be a malfunctioning check valve...? But rare, anyway.

There is no actual operating requirement for the hand primer, it is only there to prime the fuel system following a filter change or after running out of fuel. So, theorectically, you could remove it completely and replace it with a section of hose.

Let us know how you get on, won't you?

Hi DL

Yes the hand primer, i'm no machanic so bare with my termanology! LOL
When you say a malfunctioning check valve, what do you mean? Is that within the "Hand Primer", or is it something that could result in the Hand Primer keep collapsing? I just put the blockage down the pipe causing that.
It has been replaced now anyhow, when i bought it i blew and sucked, and i could only get air to go through one way as told, so the other one, which was only 5 days old had definately gone inside because i could blow and suck air easily.
Yes i'll keep you posted, cheers for your help once again.

The primer bulb is fitted with a one way valve to prevent the fuel draining back, under gravity, to the tank. So, in hindsight, I would advise against not fitting one there, as I advised earlier.

If there was no valve, you wouldn't be able to use it as a primer, either.

Great stuff, let us know how you get on, won't ya?
