Brake light stuck on, Micra:suggestions? - googolplex
Well, just as it says. W reg Micra. The driver side brake light is stuck on when the lights are turned on. Before I get going with the old tool kit, does anyone have any suggestions? This is a new one to me. Any help greatly appreciated.

Is it a twin filament stop/tail bulb?

If so, it maybe forved in 180 degrees out of sync with the contacts, or the two contacts in the middle may be bent so one touches the wrong one on the bulb.

I\'m sure the problem is located in the bulb holder anyway.

You could even unplug the bulb holder assembly and swap it to the other side if the plug is the same to see if the problem swaps sides.

Just a thought. But have you noticed whether the sidelight`s come on when brake is applied.Could be a single filament bulb has been fitted?.Rather than a double ie stop/tail bulb

Does the left brake light work normally?

Thanks as ever for the prompt responses.

The rest of the lighting system works fine. I noticed it when following the Mrs home the other evening (nothing sinister, I promise). Thought it was the fog light at first. The other brake light works normally and there seems to be no suggestion of side lights operating out of turn although I will check this. I'll have a delve today and see if fiddling will effect a cure. Perhaps a new bulb will do the trick.

I can echo what Sooty Tailpipes has said....

Recently I changed both tail light / brake light bulbs on my passat and noticed that when SWMBO braked (with side-lights off) the brake lights were dim, when we then turned on the lights they immediately became the same brightness as would be for brake lights but when she braked with side-lights on, there was no increased brightness.... problem was that I had put the bulbs in wrong way round and the wrong filament was lighting up.

As mentioned by sooty tailpipes remove the bulb slightly and turn and re enter ..... would suggest you turn the lights on then insert the bulb in the holder making sure that only the lower filament lights up, then get someone to brake for you and the upper filament should light, presto brake lights sorted...

Hats off to you folks. I've just taken the bulb out, turned it through 180 degrees and replaced. Problem solved.
The irony of this, now I think about it, is that this bulb was replaced by the local garage at its recent service/MOT...shows how much they check these sorts of things!
Many thanks for all the help.

Glad its sorted.
I was about to say that there are at least two different 5W/21W bulbs. Was the right twin fillament bulb fitted?
The two I know are the common side/stop and the side/fog as used on my Sierra.
So we owners of old Sierras need to get the rare bulb.
The bulb I need does not have pips opposite each other on the base but they are still at different distances from the contacts.

This bulb was the same as yours then, pips opposite but at different distances from the base.

I suggest you inform the garage of their MOT error!
