Bus Lane Penalty - Dougie
Do you get points on your license as well as a fine for a Bus Lane Penalty ?

About 14 years ago I got stopped for riding my motorbike in a bus lane in London. I think it was about £20 fine, definatley no points back then. Of course it may have changed scince then.

The PC that stopped me jumped out from a bush he was hiding in (I'm not joking) and gave me a ticket. I think he was new on the job and had been sent out for the day giving out tickets. It was quite comical the way he leaped from the bushes and stopped me. All very dramatic and I'm sure he went home and told his mum how he had apprehended a dangerous criminal :)

BTW -Even though I don't ride motorbikes anymore I still beleive they should be allowed to use bus lanes.

They can in Bristol. Excellent idea.

Pretty sure its just the fine. In London they're covered by Council employed "enforcers" and dealt with in the same way as parking - ie disputes to an adjudicator rather than the Mags Ct.

Using them as a pedal cyclist I'd keep the bikers (well actually it's all those weavers on L plated scooters) out. The buses are big, sluggish and predictably positioned, the scooterists none of those things. Pedal cyclist casualties would be the inevitable result.

If the Traffic Regulation Order for the bus lane was made under Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (5 or 8) then straighforward fine of up to &1000- no disqualification , no endorsement and no penalty points.

I had a bus lane penalty myself, after using a bus lane to manoeuvre around stationary traffic when turning left at some traffic lights on Hammersmith Broadway (turning left into King Street).

£40 fine (I think it's £50 now) in London and no points, no need to declare it to the insurers as it was issued by Hammersmith and Fulham's parking enforcement people.

I even managed to pay the fine online by debit card the day I received it.

Been there, done by that.

Travelling down Shepherds Bush road to Hammersmith roundabout about a year ago, jumped last 10 yards (as I was turning left and the lane ahead was free) got stung twice in one week. It was £40 if you paid within 14 days, £80 up to 30 days and then court after that (same as parking ticket?). Beware all who travel around Hammersmith roundabout - there are live video cameras on poles (connected to a monitoring station) at almost every entrance/exit and they don't miss much.

This probably belongs in a separate thread, but is there a roundabout more dangerous than Hammersmith? I have to travel around it every day to get to and from work and it seems to be the most non-sensical crazy free-for-all junction in the land.

If/when I cycle to/from work (Ealing-Fulham) I have to go around it - truly terrifying on a bike. The worst bit is between Fulham Palace Road and King Street where 2 lanes peel off to go down the A4 - you have to just fight it out with the cabbies.

As for a similar driving experience - try the Hangar Lane "Gyratory" - dreadful.

And trying to stay on topic - never had a bus lane fine, though one day I was driving down Uxbridge Road and a bloke wound down his window and shouted at me. I wound mine down to see what he wanted (expecting an earful about something), and it turned out he was just trying to warn me that there were bus lane cameras, so don't risk the turning-left trick. What a nice chap.

I nominate the Place de l'Etoile in Paris (the road around the Arc de Triomphe). A truly mad place.

I agree - it is worth going up the Arc for an hour or two just to marvel at the chaos below that is apparently a road junction!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

What's the junction at the other end of the Champs Elysees (I think) - Place de la Concorde? I remember standing there watching the cars lining up 6 abreast waiting for oncoming traffic to clear so they could race for the 2-lane exit.

Totally agree! why go to Magny Cours when the Place de la Concorde makes better viewing!

Just had one of these. Hmph, an expensive trip to Maplins. I think I parked there for a minute, but didn't notice any bus lane cameras as there are on the other side of the road. Must've been caught on CCTV.

Can I just confirm its 50quid and no points?

Me and my dad crossed the Arc de Triomphe roundabout on foot after totally missing the fact that there was a subway...

Indeed it is. Now known as Place Charles de Gaulle (since the General died in 1970) the excitement of the race around the circuit is heightened by the cobbled surface, a pure delight in rain. On my first trip to Paris I made it from Foch to Wagram (who needs Sat Nav? Eighth exit, easy-peasy!) in a matter of seconds.
On my next visit to Paris a few years later, I witnessed as a pedestrian from under the arch itself what is probably Europe’s ultimate act of driving stupidity as a hapless tourist in a red Toyota missed his turning and promptly turned round and drove back - against the flow of traffic! Unmistakeable black on yellow British registration, I’m afraid to say.

I have had the pleasure of using this roundabout about four or five times before Christmas, going from Shepherd Bush Lane to A4/M4. Horrid. The bus lane at the very end of Shepherds Bush Lane is just plain confusing. The signage or lane marking are minimal. I even succeeded in getting lost coming from the A4 to SBL! I'm just glad i drive an old car, people in shiny new ones let you move over!
Bus Lane Penalty - Almo

I was travelling south along Camberwell New Road a few years ago and there was a car waiting to turn right and no other traffic in either my lane or the bus lane ahead, so I did a simple, cautious manouver, into the bus lane for no more than 5 metres, just to go around this single car turning right! Lo and behold I got a ticket and the person editing had very cleverly taken the still at the exact time I was fully in the bus lane, but clipped it so that it did not show the car I was right next to as I undertook !!! This incident has always bothered me and is the worst possible example of overly agressive traffic enforcement and income generation that I have ever experienced. The actual people involved in the decision to act in such a way and cunningly edit the stills to make it look fully justified and without any obvious mitigation, I curse their souls to the DARKEST HELL FOR ALL TIME!!!!!! Shame on you and thank God for KARMA!

Bus Lane Penalty - FP

The editing is irrelevant. Undertaking is no justification. You were in the bus lane for 5 metres. The road was quiet; you needed a bit of patience, that's all.

We can argue for a long time about the use of bus lane cameras, speed cameras, yellow box cameras and so on. They are all there because, without them, enough people drive in such a way as to be a PITA for others. Of course they are blunt instruments, but they are a fact of life and only an unobservant or careless driver gets caught.
