Can anyone tell me whether or not it is a legal requirement for motorbikes to be fitted with a number plate light? My current Yamaha YZF-R6 is fitted with a number plate light, but I was wondering whether or not it was by law that it had to be fitted.

Yes, according to: Statutory Instrument 1989 No. 1796
The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989

However, a plod acquaintace informs me that motorcycle number plates are not actually covered by the same requirements as to lettering, layout etc. as applies to cars.
Any "in the know" comments?

There is a smaller font and different spacing specification for bike plates, but the font style is the same and the materials used are the same as for other vehicles. DVD posted a link on this a while back so I will see if I can find it.

And he goes and beats me to it.
The link so helpfully posted by DVD in September was
www.tinyurl.com/m7v5
But as he's just posted all the useful bits, I'll just get back in my box. :o(

ps. Don't make the mistake I made initially and search for posts containing the word "Regulation" written by DVD. You will get 58 returns!

I guess the R6 has red LED rear stop/tail lamps?? If so then thats why it needs a numberplate lamp. Earlier ones had white filament stoptail lamps that illuminated the plate through a clear plastic bit of the tail light.

apologies for moving slightly off thread - can a bike be clocked by a speed camera. With no VRN on the front how is the offender traced? Apologies - located in Ireland - not many cameras here - Yet.....
