vw golf gti cutting out - tanbank

i have a 1996 golf gti 57000 on clock. has been an excellent car but for the last 2 months has started cutting out intermitantly. sometimes it will start again straight away but others it takes about five minutes to restart which is a pain if in the town centre blocking the road. took to garage they put it on the giagnostic machine but it would not cut out for them so could find no fault but suggested that this fault is usually down to the module/coil, had a new one fitted and also the rotar arm cleaned but it hasnt fixed the problem. any suggstions greatly received.

I would have the fuel pump checked out.and if that is OK check out the pump relay.not saying that will cure it but you never know
