My daughter has a 97 (98my) 1.4 Polo. Yesterday while driving to work the oil pressure warning light & buzzer came on. Stopped car, no oil leaks, oil level ok. Called out the RAC.The patrolman rechecked the oil level, confirmed ok and checked all obvious things.Asked my daughter to restart the engine which she did--problem gone!The RAC patrolman advised my daughter to drive the car home, he would follow her in case of problems (good service from the RAC)but the problem did not come back. RAC advised taking car to garage to get it checked out.
Does anyone know if there is a problem with Polo oil pressure switches that could cause this problem? Failing that can anyone recommend a good VW independent garage in Bristol?

The two sensors involves, i.e. low oil pressure and no oil pressure are both normally open cct then engine off. If running you have a poor connection to either of them you will gat a warning. The RAC gut may well have checked these thus irradicating the problem. Revisit the sensors and clean the connectors properly and run it for a while. After a a 5 mile run or so stop the car and leave it for 15 mins then restart and monitor how quickly the oil warning light goes out. If it is 2 or less that AOK. If you are really unsure have a garage remove a sensor and temporarily fit and oil pressure gauge to put your mind at risk. Regards Peter

I had the same problem on my Nov 97 (1998MY) Polo diesel. The fault turned out to be in the dash binnacle, the whole of which was replaced by VW at a cost of near £200 for the part alone if I remember correctly.
With my experience it might be worth seeking out a good auto electrician/electronics expert to see if they could diagnose and replace the failed component in the dash circuits, rather than the whole thing.

Andy, when you say dash binnacle do you mean the whole instrument panel? (speedo/tacho/fuel/warning light assy etc). That sounds like a major disassembly as my haynes says the steering wheel (with associated airbag) has to come off to access this.

Yes, I mean the whole lot. As you say it sounds like a major job. I let VW do the lot as I was out of the country at the time and couldn't practically do much else.
I don't know what the labour charge at VW was because the supplier sent the part to Aberdeen instead of Ashford, so the dealer waived the labour as a good will gesture.
