Does that apply to Police cars as well???
LOL :o)

Absolutely correct LD.
As the Licence is free for Police etc, then if the renewal is late, the supplement will be applied and this will be free, as will the 40 note option.

the supplement will be applied and this will be free
I read it as the 'supplement' will be payable even if the VED is rated as zero - so plod can be done.
Another 'freebie' is the 'historic vehicle' where VED is zero. If someone nicks your disk (I'm refering to a bike now) you have to pay for a replacement - however it's still free to appply for a complete year.
Last time in the post office the man suggested to me that I wait a few days or I'd be paying for a whole month just for a weekend of use - doh!

My bike tax disc is a scanned and printed copy while the original lives in the filing cabinet. So if someone does nick it I can produce another at minimal cost. I know I can be done on the "forged instrument" rule, but I'll take the risk.

My bike tax is located under the pillion seat (R6) with the tool kit & disc lock etc. That way it should stop any thieving devils nicking it but I can also produce it on the spot if necessary. Like you Hawkeye I also take the risk of not having the original disc located on the left hand side of the bike.

After the heated debate that I started a couple of months ago I decided it best not to post that I had informed the police about their 9 un-licenced vehicles. A chief inspector from the offending nick called me and admitted that they did have an administration problem, and agreed with me that it was hypocritical.
They now seem to have cleaned up their act, so my 'hobby' is no more ;-)

Would this surcharge apply to the free classic car discs as well?
I admit I'm sometimes late with that, mind you it's a great feeling getting your free tax disc.
