thankfully not my car.far too modern!1991mk 2 8v golf gti.the starter was going slow so a mate replaced the battery.ok for a week then started going slow again so he then fitted a new starter.now it turns over fine but just wont fire.theres petrol but no spark.no voltage to be mesured between + and- at the coil.it has an after market immobiliser fitted which appears to be clicking off red light goes out ect.seems like the ecu has gone pop to me.are we missing something glaringly simple?he doesnt think he shorted anything out.any ideas?cheers bunny

A common fault on these is a poor engine earth which leads to slow starter operation. Unfortunately the starter is looking for an earth path so uses the injection wiring loom instead, frying the ecu. It is possible hopefully that the immobiliser has gone pop instead. First job is to check the condition of the earth strap from the battery to the body terminal (just below the battery tray) and the engine earth stud on the gearbox. Youll probably find the stud just shears off as you undo it, its so corroded. Open out the hole on the strap and bolt it onto another gearbox bolt. Once you are happy with that then carry on your diagnosis!

....such a simple problem causes so much grief/damage!

Hope you get it fixed soon, used parts are plentiful & cheap if thats any consolation.

well we now know that the ignition module on top of the ecu?... is ok.has been tested.batt earth etc were checked(ish) before the starter was replaced.my feeling all along was that the after market immob had gone pear shaped.it seems to click ok when key ring is slotted in and the starter works fine when you turn the key(without slotting the key ring thing in the starter dont work) how easy would it be to disconnect the immobiliser?surley not a two min job ,otherwise wouldnt be much use to start with!my mate whos car it is is pulling whats left of his hair out!cheers, bunny.

Shouldnt take good auto electrician more than a few minutes to bypass as most of the ones I have come across seem to have been fitted really obviously so it doesnt need a rocket scientist to work out which wires have been cut and routed through the immob unit.
Work out which wire from the ign switch powers up the system and follow it down the loom. Shortly you will find it has been cut and soldered into another black wire. Continue following the loom and you will find your original wire again. (If it has been done correctly it should be miles away but is usually only a couple of inches)Again it will have a black wire soldered to it. Rejoin this wire and you have bypassed the immob.
