Hi there,

I currently drive a 94 Citroen Xantia 1.9TD. I'm looking to buy a 98 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X as my next car.

I'm just wondering how 'different' the 2.0 will be compared to my 1.9TD. I've checked the figures etc, which state the 2.0 is faster 30-70 than my Xantia, it's considerably faster 0-60 etc, but I'm just wondering about real-world conditions. I like the fact I can acclerate in almost any gear without having to worry about changing down. Will I be able to do this with a 2.0?

Economy aside (It isn't really an issue as I only do 5000 miles a year), will I regret moving to petrol?

The biggest thing you will notice is that you don't notice the engine at idle. You'll wonder whether you remembered to start the car! A 2 litre petrol engine is a pretty good choice as it should have the oomph to accelerate in most gears. You will find the 'sweet spot' for each gear and each speed will be further up the rev range. If you are travelling at 30 and wanted to accelerate anything other than gently then knocking it down to 3rd would be better than putting your foot down hard in 4th and waiting for it to pick up. 16v engines seem to be more sluggish at lower revs but I don't know whether the ford is 16 or 8v. If it is the latter it might be less noticeable.

Enjoy the silence but getting heavy with the right foot will lead to 30 mpg econonmy or worse on short trips.
