Peugeot 406 Speedo problem - BobbyDazzler
Hi everyone

My brother has a Peugeot 406 2.1 TD LX (1996) with a decidedly iffy speedo. It works intermittantly...comes on then goes off during a typical journey. He suspects it's speed related as he reports being able to sometimes 'force' it to work while getting up some speed pretty sharpish on the motorway.

The relay (?) was changed in a control unit in the glovebox on the advice that it was this that was at fault, but to no avail.

Could the only culprit left be the sensor on the transmission? (ML5T)

Apparantly these are pretty expensive so he's trying to find a a cheaper solution. Is there any way of 'DIY' checking?

He can live with the problem except for the mild shock of suddenly finding the power steering going awol....not good on sharp bends as you can imagine.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Bob

It might be worth checking for good electrical connections at the sender end, especially if this is in a place that gets spalshed with water and road salt.

When it stops working, does the pointer drop back to zero or stick where it is? If it drops back it is probably an electrical fault of some kind, but if it sticks it is probably mechanical.

I had a sticking speedo pointer on my BMW and twice repaired it by dismantling and lightly oiling. I had just become confident in it when it failed a third time. If the car gearbox had been a manual I could have estimated the speed from the tacho but, being an auto, I could be doing anywhere between 35 and 45 in a 40 mph zone so I decided to invest in a new speedo head (around £100, probably about the same for a Peugeot).

That was pure exaggeration -- I have to own up to the fact that I hadn't got a clue what speed I was doing!

Thanks Dizzy

The speedo drops back to zero.

Apparantly new head units on these are in the £650 mark!!

£650!! Mine was actually £95 + VAT and the storeman said I was lucky that BMW had recently cut some parts costs for my model otherwise it would have cost almost £200. I thought that was ridiculous for what is basically no more than a stepping motor, dial and pointer!

A colleagues speedo stopped working altogether on his 306. Peugeot garage told him to look in the fuse box and remove the Shunt fuses and then refit. Apparantely all it needed was the electrics disconnecting to reset the speedo electronics. Don't forget to dig out your radio code first though.

This may not be an electrcal problem at all.Early 406s have problems with mechanical drive system to electric speed sensor, the nylon drive gear looses mesh with final drive on differential.

Thanks very much all

elekie....any idea on how to re-sync this nylon drive?

Dave...Excuse my ignorance...what are 'shunt' fuses?

Bob

This is a wear problem on final drive output gears.needs stripping of diff unit to repair. also a shunt fuse is a metal link bridge that connects 2 parts of fuse box.(comonly used on French cars)

406 2.1TD suffers from speedo transducer faults...did one today £70 parts cost

Also affects the speed sensitive steering effort, too. Possibly dangerous.

As mentioned further up the thread by elekie&a/c doctor,

cheers mate.........but i dont know where to start could u explain where to look and how to reset the electrics

Locate fusebox and open.
Look for the metal links (shunt fuses) and pull them out.
Wait a few seconds, then re-insert them.
Peugeot 406 Speedo problem - pug_306_xsi_8v
take them all out then put them in.........or one by one

As mentioned earlier, I was only repeating what a colleague was told to do, which cured his problem.

I am not familiar with the Pug fusebox, but however many shunt fuses there are, pull them all out (noting exactly where they go) and then refit one by one.

thanks alot mate....................

Speedo transducer was £34; didn't cure the problem.

A new speedo ECU (Glovebox area) cured it.

how much does a speedo ecu cost mate
Peugeot 406 Speedo problem - pug_306_xsi_8v
hi there mate i just phoned peugeot up....and there said it could be the engine coil......or the actual clock.....would you think ......cheers mate

I think they are spinning you a yarn! You were probably answered by a spotty 18 year old Saturday worker......

I *think* the speedo ECU was about £40; will check and also try to get a photo of it. If I have the time I will open it up and have a peek inside, see if I can see a dry joint etc etc
