Colleague bought a Ford Ka with 14000 miles and full service history for £4450. Had to chase up the dealer to get the service booklet which turned out to be a replacement book with the first stamp at 14000 miles dated the day she bought it and over written 'predelivery inspection'. In other words there is no documented service history. I've told her she would have paid less money for a vehicle with no service history but I dont know how much less. Anybody got any ideas ?

How old is it Claude, makes a difference.

If it's a genuine 14,000 then the only service would be at 10,000 and would only be oil change, tappet check and safety check.

The service history is only worth something if it has been filled in accurately and the work actually carried out, dealers make a big thing about it when you sell your car, they can use it to knock the price down if its not filled in. After several experiences of main dealers simply stamping the next record to say they have serviced the vehicle and not even lifted the bonnet prior to a sale my opinion is that they are worthless bits of paper.

Ahh Chris the service history is never worthless, meaningless maybe but always valuable.

I recently bought a 2 year old car from a main dealer; one of the manufacturer's employees had had it as a discount purchase. A check of the servicing record showed that the 6 month checkover had not been done and the 12,000 mile service that had been due was not done until 17,000. The dealership put 5,000 miles on it using it as a runabout and without servicing it! They sad that the odd service history wouldn't bother them. It might be a different story if I try to trade it elsewhere.

NEVER believe a garage will do something if they've already been paid.

A friend of mine has a phrase...Have you been paid? Then the job's done.

Since cars all have ECU's why isn't the service history all contained on an easy to download computer file? It would solve so many problems.

I'd guesstimate £300-£500 for the FSH - has she taken it up with the garage?

Claude: Your friend could test this in Court if she is up to it. However, a clever lawyer could argue that a "full service history" is exactly what she got unless she knows and she can prove that they have missed out some part of the history. If the dealer had said that the car has been serviced fully and timely according to the manufactures specifications, - now that is a different issue.

Out of interest both VW, Mercedes and Toyota (and other makes I'm sure) can access a car's dealer service history from their computers. Everything that's been done by any franchised dealer will show up at every other dealer. Most dealers will give you a print out if you are dubious about a service record. I don't know whether Ford has such a system - they certainly should have. You can argue about whether a service may or may not have been carried out correctly but without a dealer service record you may have resale problems with relatively young cars. Just try selling a Merc without a dealer service record!

Ford have such a system. It does not appear to work well as I bought a Fiesta from a main dealer which had been serviced : but not recorded on computer records...

Ford's system worked the other way for me with my 2001 Mondeo. I bought it from a car supermarket and it was not supplied with the service history or record booklet, which had got lost, but the car had been serviced at Ford dealers and was on the Ford computer. I had NO problem with my local Ford dealer when it came to subsequent warranty work. Had your Fiesta been serviced by a Ford main dealer ?

When I went to my nearest main dealer with the 8-year-old BMW that I had just bought in May 2000 with full service history, they just dialled in the registration number and had the total history from the central computer on their screen in seconds. But when I called in at a BMW main dealer for a part whilst on holiday in another county, they assured me that there was no record of my car on the central computer. They came out to double-check the registration number then showed me that they had the ones registered immediately before and after but definitely not mine. When I got home I checked at my local dealer and there it still was!

My car had been serviced by a Ford main delaer.. not the one I bought it from....

You can look up your servcice history on Ford's computer system if you register your car with them...

As far as BMW are concerned when I bought a 1990 320i, they could provide me with fsh details from their computer in 1996 when I bought it..

I should think most franchise dealers can provide a history for any car they sold new, but I'm not so sure about the completeness of national networks. Ask the original selling dealer if you know which it was. Rear number plate? Service booklet?
