....have in pilot areas been given powers to stop vehicle (generally LGVs) for inspection. They are using marked up Focii and can "pull" moving vehicles...according to the article I read "to help free up Police resources" A good thing or the moving towards a privatised Police Force.

Just one question, how would I know that I'm travelling through one of these pilot areas and therefore have to stop for someone other than a police officer or traffic warden?

A very good point. And the "splintering" of the country (policing wise) is going to become a big issue I think. I suffered a recent example of this. In my area mobile and static cameras are clearly marked by the camera on a stick sign and the the actual hardware painted in vivid colours. Whilst travelling in another part of the country (Yorks) I was, how can I say, progresssing on a dual carriageway without any static signs when I spotted plain white van on a flyover with cameras deployed for both carriageways. The other example is the Community Support Officers, Wardens and the such like - in some areas they have pwoers to detain and issue tickets..as a stranger in an area how am I expected to know ?

As they say, ignorance of the Law is no excuse. ;-)
Otherwise future asylum seekers from Hawaii would say " sorry, I ddn't know - because age of consent in Hawaii is only x years"?
VOSA - Pugugly {P}
I've got no argument with that - all I am saying is that the law should not be allowed to be tweaked accross county boundaries in England and Wales.

Walking through local town recently I saw two rather malnourished-looking youths wearing what looked like police uniforms. On closer inspection they had embroidered patches which said 'Community Officer' (or something similar). What are they? Do they have police powers?

With all these different bodies with various authorities no wonder Joe Public is confused. Just wonder if it all is part of a master plan for Bambi - join them all together under one banner and call them Police. In one foul stroke he quadruples the strength of Police.

VOSA is in/coming in to Staffordshire for your info - it's been well publicised in the local press but I see your point about just passing through and not knowing. I don't think as a young woman I would stop for anyone who didn't look like a police officer.

Don't really have an issue with different tiers of policing, within reason, after all we already have it to a certain extent with traffic wardens, and we pretty quickly got used to them!

It all seems to work pretty well in France, Spain, Turkey etc. In Spain, at least used to be, the guy in the blue uniform was the local traffic warden/tourist police, the guys in the green were equivalent to our county forces, and the chaps who wore so much body armour they looked like they were about to play the Dallas Cowboys were to be avoided if possible!

My issue is that these changes are becoming so localised that just moving between adjacent towns their powers seem to change. We should have these different authorities nationally codified and applying national laws. To keep this a little bit motoring, we are now such a mobile society that we can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in totally different parts of the country, I just think we should be able to do that under the same laws.

when I spotted plain white van on a flyover with

I drove up to Northern Scotland the other week (M6 - M74 - etc) and saw a number of white vans on flyovers. As I neared I saw signs on them saying they were s************s or something like. Did they mean "speed cameras"? If so, why the weasel sign? Is this another example of the double-speak nonsense which is taking over this country? Maybe I'm wrong and they were *s************s*. If this is the case, can someone explain in what way they contribute to making a journey safer? Perhaps I should qualify that at the time: weather perfect, traffic light, no roadworks or other obstructions.
We're all doomed.

8 Ball - you answered your question within the question and earlier in the post when you said " obscene" and "... Did they mean "speed cameras"? If so, why the weasel sign? Is this another example of the double-speak nonsense which is taking over this country? .."

[I asked this question some time ago, and IIRC, the reply was that HJ attributes another stronger word in place of "weasel" or "double-speak". In other words, it is a swear word as far as this site is concerned and recognised as such by the software! ]

35 years ago in Spain, the rule of thumb seemd to be that if the man had a uniform AND a machine gun, it was a good idea to stop.
