Volvo V70 Diesal (D5) Starting problem - Durelli
I have a 2003 model V70 D5 which was first registered Sept 2002.

For the past couple of weeks starting as become more of a problem, it taking a few seconds to start, and more recently I've been using the accelerator while starting to get it to 'fire'.

However yesterday morning it didn't start at all. I called the dealer for advice, and all they could offer was to take the car in under warranty and they would look at it.

So the car was recovered, and I was given a hire car under warranty.

I've not heard anything about my car. I've checked with Volvo confirming there are no outstanding recalls.

Over the phone the Volvo mechanic suspected the Diesal pump which hes known to fail on other D5 engines.

Does anyone know of any problems with the D5?
Is it becoming normal not to be able to do anything to modern cars without a diagnosis computer?
When should I chase the Volvo dealer about progress? What is reasonable?

Having written the initial message I thought there was no problem in chasing the dealer.

Apparently it is the diesal pump and a new one is being fitted. They are working on extending my hire car cover.

So it seems Volvo D5's have problems with Diesal injector pumps.

Durelli - Just out of interest, how many miles had your D5 covered before the fuel injector pump packed up ????

30,000

It was a demonstrater for the first 7k.

I've then done the rest, mostly commuting from Reading to Wembley on the M4,A404,M40,A40,A406. so lots of M-way, and a fair bit of traffic.

Are there any other things that are going to fail?

It's an auto box, how many miles is this expected to last? Is there anything I can do now to extend it's life?

I've used all sorts, Shell, BP, Esso, Texaco. But my local garage is Total, so I've used more of that than anything.

What Diesal fuel is the best to avoid this sort of problem?

I suppose there's no way of proving this, so I have no come back on Total.
Would a complaint mean that Total may improve matters in the future? Without admitting there is a problem now of course.

Are any of the Diesal fuel additives of any use if using lower quality fuels?

Thanks for the input.

Picked up the car on Saturday.

Apparently the repair cost £1250 plus the cost of the hire car.

I asked about different fuel types being a problem and he said not and he'd not heard of anything like that.

He did say they swapped one of these every month cause of people putting petrol instead of diesal. The slighest bit of petrol will destroy the pump.

The pump apparently pumps the diesal out at 2000 PSI.

As part of the work they put £15 of Diesal in the tank, however, there wasn't that much more in the tank when I picked it up.

They did say though that this is the first they've had to change under warranty/due to a fault.

However, my car is still not starting properly, to the extent I had doubts it was going to start at all this morning.

So I'll be back in touch with the dealer.

Anyone else have any problems with Volvo D5's?

To bring you upto date so far.

I booked the car in for it to be looked at, this was for the 30th Oct (9 days away) because of the need for a courtesy car.

However, Starting was a major problem, I had people offering me jump starts etc in car parks on multiple occasions.

On Thursday it didn't start again. The dealer thought of getting the car on level ground and putting more fuel in. This was done (fuel via the RAC) with no change.

The RAC sent a mechanic this time, he said there wasn't much he could do, he needed a diagnostic computer, and if he had one, he then wouldn't be able to get the parts which would need replacing!

So the car needed recovery. Which was done and I was given a hire car again.

I heard nothing on the Thursday.

On the Friday the dealer said the fuel pump had failed and would be replaced.

On Monday they called to say the new fuel had made no difference. The car still wouldn't start. They had no idea what was wrong and could not explain what happened to the first 2 fuel pumps.

I have heard nothing since.

Anybody want to buy a volvo?

They have now replaced thee injectors, even though these weren't broken.

They can't explain what caused the problem, nor guarentee that it won't happen again.

I've asked about a free extended warranty!

Typical: change the most expensive thing first! Have they considered other more mundane possibilities? glow-plugs, air in the line, blocked filter, all of which are possible faults. Another tack would be to call in a Volvo technician, as this is all very odd, not to say expensive!
