Ford Sport ka - BaseRSXmanual
I just learned that this car exists! Another example of how Ford brings more cool cars out in the UK than in the USA. :( So what are the specs? Is the 1.6L in the Sport 70BHP? It was hard to tell and I don?t know how to convert cc into BHP. How long has the roadster version of this car been out in the UK?

CC = 1/1000 of a liter or 0.061 cu in.

The 1.3, base model Ka, has 70 hp and can be had discounted for £4998, or a little over $7,000 including destination charge but, as Americans like to do, excluding sales tax - which is much higher here.

The 1.6 3 door hatchback (but you might call it a coupé) is about £9495 or $13,500 on the same conversion basis. It has a 95 hp, 1.6 liter engine and weighs about 2000 lbs, so it's not especially quick. 0-60 comes up after an embarrassingly slow (for the US) 10.8 seconds, apparently.

The roadster is called the StreetKa and £2000 discounts are available, bringing the price down to £11495 or $16,300. That might sell, although it really is small - about the size of a new MINI Cooper but with 20 hp less.

David,
I fear your post is a little confusing.

The base model Ka can be obtained for £4,999 INCLUDING sales tax(VAT) and destination charge(delivery)from Trade Sales.

Where did you get your exchange rate from? You appear to be using approx £1 = US$ 1.42. It is currently £1 = $1.67 which changes your US$ prices from $16,300/13,500/7,000 to $19,196/15,856/8346.

Okay, to clear it up: UK prices include VAT but the US prices don't - they're UK/1.175 × 1.66andabit, which works out at about 1.42. It gives an idea of what Ford is getting for them compared to US market cars.

Oh and Trade Sales will want to add an admin fee, first registration and road tax (£110ish) to those prices; some main dealers are doing UK-suupplied Ka 1.3 for that with a three year warranty.

David,
Even more confusing - you must be an accountant!!

From the number of car transporters I've seen carrying the new StreetKa, Ford intend to sell lots of them (not that it always goes to plan, of course). Seems to hit the spot with it's intended audience in my area as a few of them are enquiring about test drives.

Come on - you get the Thunderbird and the Mustang! The new version of the latter should be a fantastic bit of kit as well!

I can't imagine a 1.6 and *very* small car would sell in the US? Popular here because of tax hikes and petrol prices.

I had a Sportka out on a test drive day and was very surprised by how much fun I had. I'm not a "small car" person, preferring larger saloons such as the Mondeo. I really enjoyed this car though, it drives like it's on rails and has a brilliant engine note. Could only liken it to thrashing a go-kart round the lanes. Wasn't too noisy at 80mph either so it shouldn't be too bad on the motorway. Not sure I could buy one as it's a bit small but with it's handling and looks it'll certainly broaden the appeal of the Ka to more people.

You can't convert cc into BHP, it depends on the type of engine and the state of tune. E.g., a petrol (gasoline) engine, has a higher specific output than a diesel. The number of valves, better breathing, presence of a turbocharger etc. all are taken into account. Generally the way to measure the power is to do a test with a special device which applies a brake at various rpm, which is why it is called brake horsepower. The machine measures the torque which the engine can provide at that speed. The horse power is then calculated via a formula which I should remember, but can't. Anyone ??

The Ka and Ka2 are highly regarded as personal transport.
