My neighbour has overheated his Renault Espace 2.1TD and has been advised by his garage that it requires a new engine. How likely are you to trash this engine by overheating it? He's looked around to try and obtain a replacement/exchange engine but they seem to be in extremely short supply. Can anyone suggest a reputable supplier please (he's South Coast based but I guess that's not essential)?

Depends on many things, all related to how long did it overheat for, and how hot did it get?
If water pump failed (for instance) and the problem was noticed within a few minutes because the temp gauge needle went high, then engine was promptly switched off, then there should be no damage.
If car was driven from London to Edinburgh with no water pump, however, then there will be major damage - eg warped/cracked block, oval pistons in oval bores etc etc. You really need to establish what overheating took place, or get an "expert" to examine the engine.

Suggest he tries Universal Parts.
I don't know their number off hand but they are in Halifax and deliver free of charge all over the country. I even had a Xantia engine dropped down to Devon for no extra charge.
118 ??? will get you the number, or look in your local Yellow Pages, that's where I found them.

Also, I could not be sure but very much suspect that the same engine can be found in some Renault Trafics.
I have the normal diesel version, but I'm sure there are turbo diesels out there.
