OK being serious for a while ( I rarely am on here - except in technical)
1/ I never said or indicated i would be coming, so I feel no need to offer appologies.
2/ It was very good of Dan to organise the event and I am pleased those that did turn up felt it worth while
May I offer a suggestion for a future event, one that may be of benefit. Why not hold it more in the centre of England, and maybe at a place of motoring interest. We can then bring families on a day out.
Why not for example, everyone agree to go to somewhere say like Gaydon for the day. Or the Motorcycle museum at coventry, or the donnington collection. Maybe even everyone agree to go to the Motorshow next year? IF HJ can get some t-shirts printed we could buy and wear and advertise there it may even be a moneyspinner for the website?
Just a few thoughts.

Some good suggestions there RF, but don't forget HJ or the "site" didn't organise this - I did it off my own back. If someone in the midlands or wherever wants to organise a meet up that way then fair enough, providing I had enough advance warning I'd be there.
Problem with any discussion of "meets" to date is everyone (and this isn't sarcasm directed at you RF!) has helpful suggestions about ways to do it or places it could be done, but noone actually ever does anything towards organising it. If any of you think it could be somewhere better etc then do what I did and go organise something!

DanJ - well done for your effort and I have no criticism of your valiant work.
In fact your statement answers the Q posed by HJ as the subject of this thread.
And as I suggested above, if HJ wants a better/improved turnout, he has to endorse the event in some way and make it official or semi-official.

|
If you read my note Dan, I did give you the credit.
The beauty of something like a motorshow meet, is that its self organising. IF you are going to the mootorshow, then you are going there for yourself, agreeing to meet at say the Renault van stand at X oclock is a side event.
Just a thought.
I shall shut me trap and get back to being sarcastic and sardonic

1) I work away in Peterborough all week so only get to see my wife of 7 weeks* at weekends
2) I only see my daughter (not yet 4) every other weekend. This happened to be one of them
3) Despite extensive knowledge of cleaning cars (see Scotchguard thread), detrimental impact of digestively disadvantaged daughter on interior of Alfa is not something I want to be dealing with on a Sunday night when I have to be up at 4:30am to return to Peterborough on Monday (see 1)
4) Despite coming across as suave, debonair, tall, dark and handsome, I'm loud, short, fattish and balding. In short, I look like a shaved rottweiller. And I didn't want to scare you all.
5) Er,
6) That's it really.
Genuinely sorry I couldn't make this one, but will keep eyes peeled for future events in case they are on the "other" weekend (see 2). This should give me time to remove the comedy sumo suit (see 4) and grow another few inches.
* Hint: This indicates novelty and hence a genuine desire to be with her.....
Sorry......

Midalnds/Central England with something for the family to do would be a great idea. And perhaps some endorsement from the site, that would give it clout.
Well done Dan, sorry I couldn't be there. Could have had a pint with me old mate, King Arthur :-))
|
The words outgoing and sociable would, unqualified, be unlikely to share the space between two full stops with my name. And saturday's trip to Duxford Airshow used up my late pass for the week!.

just a thought.
Would a meet in a more rural location have been more widely attended?
As previously mentioned, this weekend was out. On one of my "other" weekends I would have enjoyed the chance to meet with you all, even in Barnet, but possibly those looking for a day out with the family would prefer something in t' country?
Who would be interested if I proposed a Southern meet in Beaulieu? Who wants to arrange a Midlands meet, a Northen meet, etc?
Dan, any tips would be appreciated!!!

This is not a dig at anyone. But there seem to be a fair few 'I would have done it a different way' posts. Which is fine - but how many of you are really prepared to stick your neck out and arrange something, wherever it be? I know I certainly wouldn't have the nerve. Dan did, and yes it was a very successful day, particularly for the alcoholics amongst us. (and the High Barnet Chinese restaursant is second to none).
Those of you who want regional meets - just do it! You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
I guess HJ is right in that most BRers do seem to want anonymity. But for those of you who don't, it can be great fun.
Dan - what can I offer you to stop you posting the photos?
;)

So who's interested? Sooner rather than later? The New Forest in the Autumn is really quite spectacular.

A good idea No Dosh
I'm starting to feel guilty for not showing up now!

I think people get shy about these things but don't realise that they will enjoy it after making the effort.
For the record I'd actually met HF and Rob the Bus about a month ago and we had a great time - dunno where they day went, or all the money in my wallet! There's a London pub whose shares have gone up though...
Dan - what can I offer you to stop you posting the photos?
Too late :) They're on their way in now, just having a few upload problems. I can be bribed with money and booze though!

So how does Sat 11th October in Beaulieu sound? I can scout out a suitable pub to meet and lunch at before we head on to Beaulieu for the afternoon.

Well I didn't go because I live in Northern Ireland and a plane trip would have been necessary - my last trip across the Irish Sea involved a two hour delay on the way there and a five hour delay on the way back, all for a 40 minute flight. Pity, as I would have really liked to meet people on here. If it had been at the beginning of August (when I was actually in England for a few days) I might have made it. I doubt that there are more than 2 or 3 members from my part of the world, so a meet for NI ain't too likely.
I like the suggestion of a more rural location - easier for dimwits like me to find, if in fact I ever make it.

I would like to meet up with people from the backroom, but no way am I travelling to london. A meeting around manchester area would ensure I attend.
there's a free pack of pork scratchings to whoever organises a meet in the northwest.

National Motorcycle Museum Birmingham, Sunday morning!
Brilliant venue and ALWAYS virtually empty, don't know why because its a brilliant place, great cafe too.
|
Will have to make consultations about the possibility of the 13th October, but I'm sure we'll come if we can.

I contemplated showing-up but as I hadn't committed didn't!
Uncannily, I did this 'blind-date' thingy at that very same pub about three years ago when Barnet played Torquay on the last day of the season to decide who was going out of the football league. We both went along as 'neutrals' having 'communicated' for quite some time previously on a footy-related messageboard.
Like 'real-time' dating then ? I find the 'chase' to be often the best part of these situations and as the other man said, it's a bit of a hike for a swift half or two.
Now, an 'overnighter' or 'lock-in'... That'd be a different matter altogether?
|
This is going to sound controversial but here goes.
We spoke about this on Sunday but it has become clear to me and others that some of the backroomers are not who they say they are.
You know who you are and I wont name any names and if that's the way you want to be then fine but don't get all over excited about a backroom meet knowing full well that you will not attend.
I know a lot of people had other commitments which is a shame because I for one would have loved to meet some more of you as we seem to have some real characters here in the backroom.
I'm looking forward to the next meet so if we decide on a date I am happy to help organise things as much as possible.
Marcos
|
Well, I am. And I have the ultimate character reference - HF and Volvoman ! Doesn't get more secure than that. Although I do deny anything they say about me !
I'm also sure that MM is who he says he is; Dynamic Dave certainly is; Growler has got to be, you couldn't make that up.
On the other hand, if someone chooses to adopt another persona in here, then I don't see the harm in it.
|
Mark,
The amount HF drinks I'm not sure she's a reliable character reference.
|
Big G told me about the meeting and we went to Handle Bar and we had some food and drinks. Bafta he didn't show. I'm looking at the pictures and HF you are maganda-naman that's beautiful in Filipino.
Best wishes
Growlette (aka Catrina)
|
Growlette/Catrina - thank you very much, that is very sweet of you.
Growler had told us you were going to the Handle Bar, so we raised a glass to you both in your absence. :)

some of the backroomers are notwho they say they are.
OK, I am an international sex symbol and I didn't want to chance HF swooning all over me and upsetting Rob.
|
Or Rob swooning all over you and upsetting HF !!
|
OK, I am an international sex symbol ...
Me too.
Ok, only the international bit is true!
BTW, Mark how's the floods? (see my earlier John Belushi reply!)
|
remind me how put a picture in some place where everyone can see it, and I'll try and post a couple.
|
p.s. "John Belushi reply" ??
|
Will start a thread for a Beaulieu meet later tonight. And I feel a picture has to be added when I have 5 minutes at home (rather than in this god-foresaken hotel) just to prove my existence.
ttfn! I\'m off to get wet on the River Nene.

Yes, John Belushi!
Here it is again, and rather apt, in your situation...
[and also contains no less than FIVE motoring references!]
"I ran out of gas! I got a flat tire! I didn't have change for cab fare! I lost my tux at the cleaners! I locked my keys in the car! An old friend came in from out of town! Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!"
- John Belushi as "Jake Blues" in The Blues Brothers

I couldn't afford it. I'm a student with no money, at all.
I would have come, i'm not afraid of who I am or what people think of me.
Well done to Dan for organising it and to the peeps who attended, sorry I couldn't be there.
I'll try to make one at some point but off to Aberdeen uni so that may put the stops on that idea for a bit...

The question was asked elsewhere in this thread , but we still haven't been told how many people did turn up . It seems unfortunately that the date did clash with a number of events __ in my case with the Goodwood Revival meeting and nothing , absolutely nothing, takes precedence over that . Those of you who have been will understand. Well done though to those of you who did support the meet .

I have a mental picture of the backroomers - why let reality spoil it?
