When the kitchen floor was being dug out they cracked the wall of a well I didn't know I had. The water began filling the hole which will be the kitchen floor one day; the floor level having been dug down about three foot for repairs and refitting of york stones.

I was up to my knees in water trying to save various tools, equipment and other stuff as well as trying to help the builders seal the well.

I would have preferred to be in London drinking.

On Dave's behalf, he had to go away for four days from Saturday afternoon; he had tried, and failed, to reschedule.

1. Girlfriend's sister called at 1130 to go and have dim sum at 1200. (I thought that would be done by 1400)
2. I was asked to drive everyone to the restaurant because I have the largest car. (That's the reason)
3. Then I have to drive them home after the lunch
3. Then I have been dragged along to Heathrow at 1500 as girlfriend's mum was due to fly at 1830. (My girlfriend insisted I should go along)
4. Then I have been dragged along to Windsor to have dinner with girlfriend's sisters and brother-in-laws.
5. Got back home at 2100

I was trawling through some documents mid-morning Sunday trying to find my daughters birth certificates to get their passports sorted out, when I came across our marriage cert. Made me remember that our anniversary is today and I hadn't got anything - cue panic!!

Well I had packed off the wife for the week-end to stay with her mother, taking the 2 kids with her, thus leaving me free to join up with the BR meet. First lie in I\'ve had for months (ie 8.30am) and called her when I was in the bath at 9am to ask how the kids were only to find out that she was half way back.

Panic ensued - the girlfriend was shipped out, the sheets changed and all other evidence destroyed.

When the family got back, I had to look after them as SWMBO was knackered and therefore no free afternoon.

Well you can't please all of the people all of the time, and there were bound to be some for whom London was a little too far to go (Growler and Ian are excused).

However, some of the excuses on here are truly dire! So many people have been clamouring for so long about a meeting, it's a little surprising that so few made the effort in the end. And probably more than a little annoying for Dan, after all it was well organised, well in advance, and well documented.

Am I the only one who thought watching England play cricket was worthwhile? I think I had better leave this forum then (hoorah, did I hear some of you cheer!).

HJ: For next time, can I suggest that you might get a lot more people attending if you

1. either - endorse the event even though not officially connected to the site,
or - make it an official approved event.

2. make it clear from the beginning that you and/or the moderators have agreed on the date and at least one of you will be there.

Who knows but you might even be able to sell offical merchandise at sometime in the future if the turnout improves sufficiently to make it economic.

Why I Didn't Show for The Backroom Meet - Altea Ego
OK being serious for a while ( I rarely am on here - except in technical)
1/ I never said or indicated i would be coming, so I feel no need to offer appologies.
2/ It was very good of Dan to organise the event and I am pleased those that did turn up felt it worth while

May I offer a suggestion for a future event, one that may be of benefit. Why not hold it more in the centre of England, and maybe at a place of motoring interest. We can then bring families on a day out.

Why not for example, everyone agree to go to somewhere say like Gaydon for the day. Or the Motorcycle museum at coventry, or the donnington collection. Maybe even everyone agree to go to the Motorshow next year? IF HJ can get some t-shirts printed we could buy and wear and advertise there it may even be a moneyspinner for the website?

Just a few thoughts.
Why I Didn't Show for The Backroom Meet - Dan J
Some good suggestions there RF, but don't forget HJ or the "site" didn't organise this - I did it off my own back. If someone in the midlands or wherever wants to organise a meet up that way then fair enough, providing I had enough advance warning I'd be there.

Problem with any discussion of "meets" to date is everyone (and this isn't sarcasm directed at you RF!) has helpful suggestions about ways to do it or places it could be done, but noone actually ever does anything towards organising it. If any of you think it could be somewhere better etc then do what I did and go organise something!

DanJ - well done for your effort and I have no criticism of your valiant work.

In fact your statement answers the Q posed by HJ as the subject of this thread.

And as I suggested above, if HJ wants a better/improved turnout, he has to endorse the event in some way and make it official or semi-official.
Why I Didn't Show for The Backroom Meet - Altea Ego
If you read my note Dan, I did give you the credit.

The beauty of something like a motorshow meet, is that its self organising. IF you are going to the mootorshow, then you are going there for yourself, agreeing to meet at say the Renault van stand at X oclock is a side event.

Just a thought.

2) I only see my daughter (not yet 4) every other weekend. This happened to be one of them
3) Despite extensive knowledge of cleaning cars (see Scotchguard thread), detrimental impact of digestively disadvantaged daughter on interior of Alfa is not something I want to be dealing with on a Sunday night when I have to be up at 4:30am to return to Peterborough on Monday (see 1)
4) Despite coming across as suave, debonair, tall, dark and handsome, I'm loud, short, fattish and balding. In short, I look like a shaved rottweiller. And I didn't want to scare you all.

Would a meet in a more rural location have been more widely attended?

As previously mentioned, this weekend was out. On one of my "other" weekends I would have enjoyed the chance to meet with you all, even in Barnet, but possibly those looking for a day out with the family would prefer something in t' country?

Who would be interested if I proposed a Southern meet in Beaulieu? Who wants to arrange a Midlands meet, a Northen meet, etc?

This is not a dig at anyone. But there seem to be a fair few 'I would have done it a different way' posts. Which is fine - but how many of you are really prepared to stick your neck out and arrange something, wherever it be? I know I certainly wouldn't have the nerve. Dan did, and yes it was a very successful day, particularly for the alcoholics amongst us. (and the High Barnet Chinese restaursant is second to none).

Those of you who want regional meets - just do it! You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

Well I didn't go because I live in Northern Ireland and a plane trip would have been necessary - my last trip across the Irish Sea involved a two hour delay on the way there and a five hour delay on the way back, all for a 40 minute flight. Pity, as I would have really liked to meet people on here. If it had been at the beginning of August (when I was actually in England for a few days) I might have made it. I doubt that there are more than 2 or 3 members from my part of the world, so a meet for NI ain't too likely.
I like the suggestion of a more rural location - easier for dimwits like me to find, if in fact I ever make it.

I contemplated showing-up but as I hadn't committed didn't!

Uncannily, I did this 'blind-date' thingy at that very same pub about three years ago when Barnet played Torquay on the last day of the season to decide who was going out of the football league. We both went along as 'neutrals' having 'communicated' for quite some time previously on a footy-related messageboard.

Like 'real-time' dating then ? I find the 'chase' to be often the best part of these situations and as the other man said, it's a bit of a hike for a swift half or two.

Now, an 'overnighter' or 'lock-in'... That'd be a different matter altogether?
Regional Backroom Meets - Marcos{P}
This is going to sound controversial but here goes.

We spoke about this on Sunday but it has become clear to me and others that some of the backroomers are not who they say they are.
You know who you are and I wont name any names and if that's the way you want to be then fine but don't get all over excited about a backroom meet knowing full well that you will not attend.
I know a lot of people had other commitments which is a shame because I for one would have loved to meet some more of you as we seem to have some real characters here in the backroom.

The back room is a great place to be social on the internet. If I want to go to be social in a pub I'll go to the local so I can drink and stagger back.
