Me again, with another quirk about my Omega. Have decide due to finance that I am gonna keep the vehicle so spent all day yesterday cleaning,polishing the whole thing in and out.
One of my alloys (passeneger rear) has large noticeable patches of what at first glance looks like dirt, however it in fact corrossion i.e. rust. The rest of the alloys look in good nick apart from the odd scrape.
Is there any way this can be rectified as it spoils the appearance of the car, also the badge that covers the wheel nuts has gone funny too!

You can get the wheel blasted and re laquered. Loads of places do them. usually about 50 quid a wheel. Might have to get all four done so they match tho!

Thieving so and so who sold me the car only equipped it with a steel rim, didn't realise until I'd got home!
Still that'll teach me, even the wife's cavalier has a spare alloy wheel!

Not all cars with alloy wheels are supplied with alloy spares. Should the Omega?

My New laguna isnt. I have 4 nice sporty 17inch alloys with low profile tryes, and a standard 16 inch steel spare with bog standard tyre.

These are standard wheels that came with the car when new.

I think all current Vauxhalls come with a steel spare even with alloys and your Omega was probably the same too from new. Is the steel spare tyre even the same size (width) as the alloys?

Yes it is the same size, seems odd as like I say my wife's car has a porper spare and so did my Dad's Granada many moons ago!

Daz, IIRC, Vauxhall stopped *giving* away spare alloy wheels around 1994 ish, and issued steel rims instead. Principle being, that you're only ever gonna use it to get you home / repair shop in the event of a puncture.

Hi Daz,
Try Halfords, they sell a range of own brand repair products , and one of the item will just suit you. Its a alloy wheel repair kit, which consists of two-part resin, cleaner wipes, abrasive, the only thing you need to buy extra is the wheel paint, these repair kits work very well, although you might be cheaper buying a pack of Araldite and wet/dry paper and paint seperately.

Hi Daz,
First step, wash wheels thoroughly, wipe dry.
Second step, get a coarse/medium wet/dry paper and tidy up the area with the corrosion and wipe the area with a alcohol wipe or cellulose thinners on a clean rag. You should now have a clean and keyed surface ready to apply a two-part epoxy resin glue or putty, apply to just proud of the surface and allow to go off hard. Next use a medium/fine paper to sand the surface smooth and a little way around the repair for a key for the paint to adhere to. Again wipe with alcohol/cellulose for a clean surface, you should be now ready to apply your wheel paint, you can apply primer at this stage although not really worth it as its on a road wheel. You could try Hammerite smooth paint on road wheels, not incredibely cheap, but you get a damn tough coating when its gone off.
One last point, try and use epoxy glue, when the tubes are warm, the glue tends to have a self leveling effect, might be useful in saving a lot of sanding.

1) I recently posted about my Omega MV6 spare being a different profile from that on the alloys, thus preventing using the spare tyre on the alloy wheel
2) When I enquired in my local tyre place about refurbing alloys they said they need to be sent away - for up to a week! And it was considerably cheaper to send all four at once (transport costs I suppose). Somewhat restrictive in the driving department... Maybe if you went direct to a refurber (or whatever they are called)...

All these are at halfords,
a pack of assorted wet & dry papers £3.99
Araldite 2part epoxy (quick set prefered) approx £4
Silver wheel paint £3.99 a can, 3 for £10 at moment
Small can of cellulose thinners/meths £2/£3.
The ready made kit which contains the basic materials minus the paint to do the job is around £15/£20.
Although you will get more value for your money if you buy the materials seperately, you could even try a local hardware store or even B&Q, they are normaly cheaper than Halfords on everyday materials, plus you will get bigger pack sizes, so you will have product left for your next project.

I have had marvellous results in the past with Simoniz Silver wheel paint and their matching acrylic laquer, ends up very durable and smooth.
You also need white primer, rub them down and fill blemishes.
Remove the wheel, deflate tyre, mask the tyre and push 2p peices between the tyre and rim to push the tyre back to geta good paint coverage around the rim and hold the masking on.
Good luck. Any probs while painting, rectify WHEN DRY!!!
If it looks weird, it usually dries better.
