I'm afraid I wouldn't be that keen on an auto version of either, as they both use a dual clutch automated manual (DCT).

As to the power, depends on how you drive, but unless you are driving like a boy racer and always have to be in front of everyone else, or tow a heavy trailer/caravan, I can't see the 120bhp of the 1.5 being a problem. Certainly not cruising at motorway speeds.

Basically, they are more likely to be unreliable.

If you were buying new, I wouldn't have such an issue with the reliability side of it, as this can and will vary a lot depending on how it is driven (and of course you'd have a warranty of at least three years). For example, motorway miles should be absolutely fine, putting minimum stress on everything. But how would you find out how a 2nd hand car has been driven?. So unless you are buying a car you know (from a friend or relative) has been driven with care, and not like a loon!.

As to smoothness, not really. They can be pretty smooth, but a torque converter (T/C) auto will be smoother, as well as more reliable. I read a lot of motoring magazines, which, along with comments on the forum from owners or folk who have taken a test drive, paint a picture of indecisive hunting about for the right gear and delayed reactions.
