KIA SORRENTO KX3 VS PEUGEOT 5008 GT LINE PREMIUM - Sarah ed

We are after a 7 seater suv type family car with a sunroof,I was wondering between these two which would would you recommend?

2018 Kia Sorrento Kx3 30k miles

2019 Peugeot Gt Line Premium 20k miles

Both £22k and will be purchased on PCP.

Any input is much appreciated. Thanks all in advance

Depends on usage, Kia is diesel only, so I wouldn't be keen if your driving is predominantly short town journeys. On the other hand, while the Peugeot is available with a petrol engine, the 1.2 Puretech is gathering a reputation for trouble, so not sure I'd be too keen on that either.

As it's the GT Line Premium, it could well be the 1.6 petrol engine, an excellent motor.

On the other hand it might be the diesel.

Hard to make a recommendation when we don't know the details. The Peugeot is nicer inside and drives better but agree that the Sorrento is the better bet for longer term reliability ...as long as the first owner looked after it.

I think you mean 'May be more troublesome', not 'Will be'. Such dogmatic remarks smack of bias, not fact. My Peugeot has been 100% reliable for upwards of 12 years, tending to suggest differently.

The reason we consider Peugeot was We had one for 5 years,not a single problem apart from changing a few light bulbs :) Maybe we r lucky

I own a Sorento, so can give a few pointers on that one...

The Sorento is a very good car. There are a couple of things to look for, however.

1. The clutch can struggle with the engine torque if the car is used for towing. The 6-speed auto is excellent. There have been a few reports of the 8-speed auto being a bit hesitant at junctions.

2. Like many part-time AWD cars, it doesn't like mis-matched tyres. The tyres should match all round, and the ones with the deepest tread should be on the front. This prevents the system thinking it needs to engage the rear diff.

Make sure the spare tyre is in place (slung underneath). If you live in a dodgy area, there is a security kit available from Kia to make it more secure.

Kia are pretty good at honouring the warranty (7 years/100,000 miles) as long as the servicing has been kept up to date.

The diamond-cut alloys are prone to minor corrosion under the lacquer. Kia are less good at paying for them to be refurbished.

All KX3s have android auto/apple car play. If you prefer to use the inbuilt satnav, a map update is available from kia dealers for £40 incl VAT.

There's no way I would buy another vehicle powered by the PSA 1.2 Purecrap engine & that comes from someone who currently owns one.

With a 2nd hand choice between a Kia & a Peugeot, the Kia would win every time.

I too would go with the Kia but I’d look for a good approved used example with a full Kia main dealer service record so that you get the remainder of that excellent 7yr warranty. Do not listen to any salesperson who tells you the warranty is still valid despite a non-franchise service history or one with missing stamps. It isn’t. I’d personally go for an auto too which suits the car better than the manual box.

I would however rethink the PCP as it’ll most likely be highly uncompetitive regarding interest. Typical rates on used cars are 10% APR or more which is a horrendously expensive way to buy compared to a low rate bank loan at 3% APR or less. Remember to compare like for like though, a 3yr PCP needs to be compared to say a 5yr bank loan for comparable monthly payments. After 3yrs on the PCP you will owe more but can hand the car back but with the bank loan you’ll have paid less in interest and it’s easy to keep it and continue the payments or sell it if you want. A bank loan is almost always cheaper and it grants you greater flexibility. PCP’s only make sense on new cars with a beefy manufacturer contribution.

We have had a Peugeot, we still have it for 5 years now,never had any problems. Pcp deal is from my own bank i work with,it is personalised and it is %5.3 so it is actually better than anybother we have found.

Not too sure Kia has those dealer stamps, i thought u got the warranty anyway??

Peugeot is eithee 1.5 or 1.6 diesel,and it is Manual ( autos are way too expensive)

After 4 years,both cars depreciate the same ( so my bank says)

We do mixed town and A road driving,and motorway usually most weekends.

These are the only 2 cars we could find within our budget on Autotrader or Arnold clarks.

It does. And a nice service book to put them in.

But ... Services on a Sorento are a little bit complicated.

In europe, it is every 2 years/20,000 miles. Whichever comes first.

In the UK, they've added a requirement to see the car every year. So for low mileage users, 'intermediate' services are just an inspection and don't even include an oil change. Bonkers.

There's also a page in the service book for the annual bodywork inspection. This can only be carried out by a kia dealer.

Still very happy with mine (KX-3 auto). It'll be towing 1500Kg tomorrow.

You’ve been lucky and that PCP rate is very decent assuming that’s the APR and not the flat rate, if it’s the latter then it’s poor. I’d still say the bank loan is a better way though as you have greater flexibility and lower interest at 3% APR or less. With a PCP you’ll typically own nothing after the term is up. But it’s all down to the individual.

Make sure that Kia has a full main dealer service record with stamps for every year and buy only if you’ve a Kia dealer within range unless you’re happy to take it with no warranty or the selling dealer offers a good quality (rare) aftermarket warranty for at least a year. These are good cars but often non-franchise dealers will tell you that the remainder of the manufacturer warranty is there but without main dealer servicing it’s almost 100% guaranteed they’ll reject any claims made on it, our local dealer certainly does.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting you should buy any of the above (particularly the latter two, though the Nissan will have most of its warranty remaining), just that there are other choices out there. We never looked at LAND ROVERS because everyone seems to think they are unreliable??

Nissan was a lovely car but when we went to see one second row was rather small and 3rd row is almost non exaistent. We like the Kia and the Peugeot, just want to get the most reliable one as last thing I want is being stranded in the middle of nowhere with 3 kids :(

As said, I wasn't advocating either the X Trail or the Disco!.

But with my last comment, what I was thinking was cars like the Ford S Max and Seat Alhambra (both available with sunroofs). Both would arguably be better family cars, both will offer more interior space than either the Sorento or 5008 (especially the third row).

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the sister car to the Sorento, so is exactly the same under the skin.

Agreed. I believe that if there was an engine issue, Kia would expect you to show that the right oil and filters had been used. You might be able to do that if you had a full, detailed invoice from the garage that did the work. They seem to be good at paying up if you've had the kia dealer do the servicing.

I don't mind paying the Kia dealer to do the service - I see it as part of the 'price' of the warranty.
