I wonder if anybody can help me? I've got a 1999 mk4 Golf GT-TDI 110 which i've had for 1 year. Last week i suffered a catastrophic failiure of the gearbox, which resulted in a £900+VAT bill from VW for a replacement - the problem according to the independant mechanic who repaired it was that 'a retaining pin on the driveshaft sheared causing the cogs to smash through the gearbox casing' on a car that's done 55000mls . Tried to get some cost towards it from Milton Keynes..could hear them laughing down the phone! Has anyone else suffered such a pocket-emptying experience with the GT-TDI? The other point is that the car is now flat-spotting on acceleration and has become very sluggish - have been informed it could now be the Air Mass Meter - does this sound ok? apparently another £200 !!! "If everything in life was as unreliable as a ..."

Hi white robbie,
Who did you speak to at VAG, MK? If you can prove that someone laughed, I undertake to refund your charges.
Please give me a name.
You are spot on, with the price of the gearbox and spot-on about the Bendix roll pins at the inner joint retainers.
Who did the work, please?
If a VAG dealer, a number will suffice. We may need to converse further.
Vw's are not unreliable. I will help you.

Sorry if I misled you but nobody actually laughed it was just an expression, but MK would not contibute towards cost as the car was out of warranty(3 yrs), and had been serviced by non-VW garage on last 2 services. When asked if 55000mls was considered an acceptable lifespan for a gearbox, the answer given was "we cannot give an estimated lifespan"

Air Mass Meter is what I\'d go for....a very common failing today.
Do you know the make of it? Bosch or Pierburg?

You have just written yourself out of £1500, my friend.
You are an HONEST person.
Absolute respect.
I will help you, if in future, you need me.
DD has my address.
All credit to HF, volvoman, eMBe, RenaultFamily etc.
Thank you for your honesty

Eh? What have I missed?
|
Come on, Einstein, you have missed nothing at all, have you?

Thanks, have you heard of the Bendix Pins shearing before then?
|
Perhaps if the car had FVWSH you might have stood a chance of a contribution I guess...
|
I'm so disapointed with the car, i'm thinking of trading it in for a Leon TDI SE or a 130 GT-TDI - what do you think?
|
Same mechanicals if you go for the Leon - but the 130 GT TDi is a nice bit of kit. I have heard of Mass Air Flow meter problems with the PD (130 & 150) TDi engines aswell, though....
|
This is one of mine.
Please, tell me, further.

|
NEVER, TRULY, HONESTLY.
Help me, folks, please.
This is not a design I approve of. It can come loose, leading to disastrous consequences.
No, I cannot help further, truly, honestly.
They don't shear. If you had asked me about a spring-loaded pin gradually working it's way out of a boring hole, well, the answer...
I am not allowed to say further.
What you have posted is entirely consistent with what is known to me.
I post my own views here, absolutely.
Ask things in a different way, and I may be able to help you.

Thanks for your comments - have to go now - i'm singing on the corner of the street - need £200 for an Air Mass Meter !!! La-La-La

A3 is exactly the same....

|
WR: have you considered just cleaning the air flow sensor? Look at Freds TDI site for details: www.tdiclub.com/ Occams razor applies.

Fred's site is excellent.......one of the best car sites on the net IMO
