Does anybody know if the footrest by the clutch on a RHD C5 can be easily removed? I know on some cars (eg the Octavia, I think) it is simply bolted on, which seems logical as obviously it is country-specific. Lifting the carpet is an obvious way to find out, but not easy to achieve in practice as it seems to be stuck. If I know the footrest can be removed, then I'll cut round the carpet at that point - and gain some much needed space for my size 13 feet (well, left foot anyway).
Any help appreciated.....

I have to say I don't know the answer to this one, however I expect it will behave like the left-foot rest does in most cars I've had - by falling/breaking off within a few months...usually at the wrong moment and lodging itself under the clutch or brake pedal!!!

Well, my C5 does seem prone to odd bits coming off - but s**'s law will probably determine that the one bit I actually want to remove has been triple-welded to the bodyshell!

Sorry can't really say for sure, but it does look very much as if it's part of the 'tunnel' pressing. Having said that, you wouldn't expect a different floor pressing for RHD - unless of course LHD cars also have a 'bump' there!
You might manage to ease away the carpet if you take out the centre console and have a look-see - but it's something I wouldn't like to try on a car as new as C5 - might even invalidate your warranty!
Admittedly, I don't have size 13 feet (just teensy 9s!) but I find the C5 a very roomy car. The only thing that bothers me about the footrest is that the plastic 'wear pad' is moulded onto the actual carpet and is difficult to keep clean.
I once had a Renault 19 which was extremely uncomfortable. I couldn't get my foot onto the footrest without jamming my knee under the wheel and keeping the left leg tucked back often resulted in cramp!

I can't imagine the LHD version having a bump there - since logically the RHD one would then have one on the passenger side too! I should have thought to look when on holiday in France.
You're right about the room though - and with that amount of room I can live with the footrest. Shame that the car is a bit let down by the quality of the interior (thin carpets, odd rattles, roof lining coming away at the back - but fixed under warranty). Or is it just because I've got the base version?

Unfortunately I do not have any dealings with the particular company which makes the C5 carpet so cannot be 100% sure, but most cars with footrests now have them moulded into the carpet with energy absorbent foam behind to prevent ankle breakage in an accident. Many cars that don't have a footrest do so because the engineers could not find a non-ankle-snapping solution. If this is the case then you will not be able to remove it. Have you tried asking the dealer?

Interesting! Must have a poke at my carpet in the morning! Yes the carpets are a bit thin. I've got the 'Exclusive' which has carpet plus separate carpet mats. It makes it a bit more comfy but both lots are fairly thin - reminds me of the old Renault 12. The French seem to put much more emphasis on practicality than finish. Of course another consideration is that the C5 is an awful lot of car for the money and you 'gets what you pay for'. I just try to be extra careful and treat everything with respect (and thick rubber mats!)
