Thinking of going for a new Corsa, the deal on odffer is too good to turn down. Only thing is - do I go for thr 1.0 or 1.2?
As an inexperienced driver, can anyone list the pros and cons of each engine?

They're the same engine, in different sizes.
Insurance will be slightly lower on the 1.0 (group 2 vs group 1), although they both come with free insurance. With a year's no claims, the difference is likely to be something like £60.
The 1.0 is cheaper to buy and more economical (50 vs 44 mpg, theoretically, although I reckon you'd have to work the 1.0 harder and lose some of that advantage). Parts and servicing costs will be near identical.
Personally I would say that the 1.0 risks being underpowered for anything other than the short suburban journeys on quiet roads and would go for the 1.2 - but then my first car was a 1.7 with 92 bhp in a car that, though bigger than a new Corsa, weighed about the same.
If you're not at all bothered by performance, get the 1.0, otherwise think very hard about the 1.2.

Agree, go for the 1.2 if you can. The extra few bhp will make it a more enjoyable drive with no serious drawbacks. I think they're both chain cam Suzuki engines, if I recall.

If its the three cylinder version get out on a good long test drive in both - at least a couple of hours over varied roads. I had a 1.2 12v as a courtesy car and it was useless, to the point of giving me no confidence that I would ever be able to overtake a slower vehicle on a single carriageway. I had a diesel Fiesta at the time so its not as though I was comparing it to a supercar!

On the other hand, I had a 1.0 12v courtesy car, and was pleasantly surprised. OK it was replacing a 1.0 Micra (which needed a new engine as it turned out), but my other car is a 2.0 Accord. Haven't driven a 1.2 Corsa.
As already suggested, best to go for a decent test drive.

I had a 1.0 corsa as a hire for 2 weeks / 1500 miles ealier this year and I'd make the following observations;
The engine was a peach, very quiet and very, very smooth, but the car was definitly underpowewred for motorway work. With 2 up it really stuggled up any sort of incline and even on the level once you were over 65mph there was zero usable acceleration.
Another point, which I touched on in an earlier post, was that the combination of a very basic seat, and a skewed seat/wheel/pedal alignment created, for me, serious backache after about 45 minutes.

Good point- in my short time with my 1.0 courtesy Corsa I never took it on the motorway or added a passenger.

Just so you know, a new facelifted Corsa (see this months Car magazine) is on the way, so if you can hold on a couple of months, it'll probably get better still.

I must admit that the 3 cylinder engine has a unique sound all of it's own. I think that the only thing that closely resembles that sound is a Singer sewing machine. I've never heard an engine whirr so much as the one in the Corsa.
