96 Nissan Micra K11 type.
The handbrake warning light on the dashboard is always on. I think it may be a faulty handbrake switch.
It has been doing this for the last 10 months/10k miles and I never
got round to sorting it out. MOT time is looming.
Is this an MOT fail?

Does the light also indicate low brake fluid as well as the handbrake being on? On my Vectra the one light serves both purposes. Not suggesting that your brake fluid is low, but the float in the reservoir could be sticking.

I'm not sure if it also indicates brake fluid level. Anyway, the brake fluid level looks fine. How do I check/fix the float?
According to www.bobmckay.co.uk
instrument panels aren't part of the MOT. You don't even need a working speedo. Although you may get an "advisory".

I have a feeling that the internal hazard lights, handbra=ke light and rear fog light must illuminate inside the car to pass an mot but I maybe wrong.
I had the same problem on an Astra years ago. If u locate the switch under the handbrake u can probably bend it back it to shap eto stop it sticking.

Daz,
As far as I can work out its enough that the external brake lights, fog lights etc. work OK to pass an MOT.
I don't think the instrument panels are tested -- some of 'em are like computers nowadays, anyway.

I am sure I have seen a speedometer section printed on the 'fail sheet'

Never did get the speedo working on my Mk4 Escort.
Passed every MOT.
N/A in the speedometer section on the fail sheet.

My Fiat Uno had the same setup - I just thought it was dodgy Italian electrics. Found out later that it served two purposes!

have a look at:
www.motuk.co.uk/mot_testing.htm
At upper left, you will find a link to the MoT tester's manual, which shows exactly what is tested and what is not.
