HJ's car by car breakdown shows the omega doing very well in last years Which reliability survey - would any backroomers please be able to say how it did this year? I am interested in one but in other surveys the mondeo seems more reliable... any thoughts would be welcome.

If the Omega or Mondeo were unreliable you wouldn't see so many used as Police Patrols.

Having worked (in a professional capacity) on various Omegas I have to say that I wouldn't want to own one, they suffer far too many problems. The new Mondeo is likely to be far more reliable, not to mention suffering far less depreciation (esp. a 6 month old one from a supermarket).
If you want an older big car, how about a Toyota Camry - likely to be highly reliable.

Although for goodness' sake don't buy a new Camry, unless you want all the depreciation of the Omega with none of the discount.

A nearly new Mondeo 2.0 LX for about £9k is pretty much unbeatable as a package.

Just been looking at various cars at Motorpoint today...was suprised at how poorly equipped the Omega is..it really is getting long in the tooth...the imminent pressing of the delete button by Vauxhall will not come a moment too soon!

But then, none of Vauxhall's cureent fodder can be described as a driver's car...everything they currently churn out is mediocre and as bland as hell.

Saying that, Vectras and Omegas are probably a great "Nearly New" buy...under 12 months old and 50% off list price for a low mileage car!!!

I said 'an older big car' - meaning a Camry that was a couple of years old. They are pretty cheap at that age and much more reliable than the Omega. I wouldn't advocate anyone buying a new Camry (or an Omega, or a Mondeo for that matter), the depreciation is far too severe.
Go to parts of the world where factory certified technicians with 'diagnostic computers' are hard to find and you'll see the natives are driving Nissans, Mitsi's, Toyotas, Hondas etc. Ever wondered why the Taliban army ran around it Toyota pickups? - they weren't fools.

95 of Omegas surveyed were free of breakdowns in the past 12 months, based on a sample of 58 cars up to two years old.

For the sake of comparison, the Mondeo was 97 per cent breakdown-free, based on a sample of 338.

The average was 94 per cent of cars not breaking down.

The cars that didn't break down at all were Honda Accord, Honda Jazz, Mazda 323, Nissan Almera Tino, Nissan X-Trail, Smart Car, and Toyota Celica. The Mazda achieved this for the second year running.

Time for me to get out more ;)
