ford transit HELP - knotty boy
i have an F reg transit 1.6 petrol van and my mate tried putting a new carb on it the only thing is now there seems to be too many hoses, can anyone help and tell me which pipe connects to what on the carb, inlet manifold and cooling system, i have a haynes manual but it neglects to tell you this vital information, thanks in advance

I am assuming you are replacing the original'VV' carb for another?
IIRC there are two coolant hoses, one from the inlet manifold directly below thw carb and another from the back of the head, possibly the heater. Both these go onto the auto choke. A fuel hose comes up from the pump and goes onto the brass tube next to the choke, near the top (at an angle of 45 deg). There is a vacuum hose poking out of the base of the carb next to the fuel solenoid, this goes (eventually) to the distributor and finally there is another vacuum hose off the inlet manifold which operates the warm air flap on the air filter via a thermac valve on the underside of the filter housing.

unfortunatley i had to put the old VV back on, i have tried to get a secondhand carb for less than 30 quid but cant even find one that costs more,
thanks for your help, will try and work it out in a bit, as the choke is sticking on now.

Car accessory shops and Ford dealers in the past sold conversion kits to change VV auto chokes to manual;don't know if they're still available.

Must say, I've a few factory fitted 1600cc Kent engined transits, but not a Pinto engined one.
Anyway , if the carb is being replaced because it's worn or can't pass the MOT emissions test, forget replacing it with another used VV. They wear out between 80k and 120k miles and can't be repaired. You'd be better off looking (scrap yards) for an engine fitted with a Weber replacement carb. They were usually fitted instead of a new VV and there must be a few still bolted to Cortina's etc.

Another dodge is to fit a manifold and twin choke weber off a sierra. Bolts straight on and even the throttle cable fits! May need to jiggle a bit with the coolant hoses but if you can wield a screwdriver and a 13mm spanner and socket it is quite easy. Take the air cleaner off the donor car as well. Only thing is dont use the electronically controlled idle speed version (has a big stepper motor on the side) and some of the sierras had electrically heated chokes. Oh, and tell your insurance company!!
