Some one is offering me a BMW 320 estate. G reg, 140,000, BMW service history to 90,000 then small garage stuff (always BMW parts he assures me). He's had it 5 years.

Looks good, sounds good but interior a bit scruffy (couple of rips in the velour).

He wants £1,500 which I think is a bit pricey but I am tempted because I know him and I know he maintains his cars well.

£1,200 if it was unknown so £300 for a bit of certainty? What do you think guys?

Well, known history is worth a sum of dosh no doubt, but 300 quid on a 1200 quid motor is over a 20% premium. And with a tatty interior? Your call mate but I would negotiate.

I don't think there's any such thing as certainty on a 14 year old, 140k car.

On the other hand, 3 Series Tourings go for insane money, even at this age and, if you want one, £1500 is about right.

I drove past a silver one of these yesterday and thought how nice it looked. It still is a good looking car today. Stick a dateless plate on it and it'll look as good as any modern car.

I'd go for it. You can always get yourself down your local scrappy and get a new seat or two.

If he's a friend why not let you have it a a good price.

As the saying goes the best way to lose a friend is to buy a car off him (or ;-) at his sister).
