BMW 3 Series Coupe - 2011 BMW 320i SE Coupe - DJL

I’ve owned this car for about a year and a half now and really enjoy it.

It’s currently due an MOT and needs 3 tyres replaced (I’m thinking as it needs 3 it might be better to replace all 4 at the same time?).

ive been trying to find out what were the original tyre sizes and brand that were fitted front and rear by BMW when the car was made but even by contacting BMW I haven’t been able to get this info!
ive spoken to National tyres and another local fitter as well as putting my reg in to quite a few different websites and they all seem to have conflicting information regarding the profile size & speed rating leaving me confused!!
I’m on a bit of a budget so want to be sure I’m buying the correct ones as well as trying to get value for money.
The only thing I’m sure of at the moment is the rims are 18” and the fronts are 225 and the rears are 255 width.

I’m leaning towards 225/40 for the fronts and 255/35 for the rears but not sure

Does anyone have the same model/year car that knows exactly which tyres I should be getting? Maybe even the brand and good places to buy from?

Also they are run flat tyres on there at the moment.
Any help appreciated . . .

Not my specialist subject, but why not ask on the appropriate BMW forum.

Just one bit of advice, do buy decent tyres..

Somewhere on the car (usually around the driver's door lock clasp) there should be a sticker which gives the recommended tyre pressures for the car, and that will list the tyre sizes that the car was intended to have from the factory.

See if your tyres sizes match any of those - or look in the owner's manual. The manual for your car will probably be here: www.bmwsections.com/docs/3series/

It looks like 225/40 front and 255/35 rear is correct, the speed rating is W.

A previous owner may have fitted aftermarket wheels, in which case you have to choose tyres that fit those wheels.

We have a 420i with similar size runflat tyres, and have found that Pirelli P7 work well. They were the factory-fit and when it came to replacement they were the cheapest 'brand name' runflat too. We got just over 25,000 out of the rears and 30,000 from the fronts.

You can shop prices by size using BlackCircles.com.

Can't advise on sizes, but would recommend Etyres, (Asda tyres effectively uses the same website/supplier - Colewood Automotive).

I just brought four 255/45R18 103Y reinforced Continental Premium Contacts from Etyres and they have £40 discount until end of March. Was £600 including the £40 off. Not bad as the same make rears have done almost 60,000 miles.

Fitting/balancing/valve at your nearest H******** (or elsewhere) included.

In my experience they are always the lowest cost of any on-line supplier.

I have no connection with the above, but have used them several times previously with no hassle

Thank you both for your help!
One other question . . . I’ve noticed some of the the tyres I’m looking at online have the BMW logo in description and some don’t.
How essential is it that I stick to the ones with the BMW logo and would there be any issues if I went for tyres without the logo in the description?
Thanks

The BMW logo does not matter just another justification for a higher price. If you are thinking of buying on line check how old the tyres are . Some look cheap because they may be 2years old or more and have been sitting on a shelf. Ring around tyre shops see what they say and if they look cheaper on line ask if they will match price. You still have to pay balance and fitting if you buy on line. There does not seem to be much of a margin in tyre prices so seeing what you are buying is best for me!

Further to the above you might want to refer to tyres rating as regards the tyre LABEL ie Wet braking noise rating and fuel efficiency. This is an EU standard

Actually its not worth the plastic its printed on. The manufacturers do the tests themselves, there is no audit of the results.

Just look at the brilliant ratings some of the ditch finders get but when independently tested they are well short of the better mid range and premium tyres especially in areas such as wet braking.

I buy premium brands if the price is right but if no deals are on the table quality mid range tyres are just fine. The last set I bought were Uniroyal, excellent tyre and about 20% less than a Goodyear/Pirelli etc. The label suggests they are poor on mpg, a bit noisy but brilliant in the wet. They are indeed very good in the wet but the car is about 2mpg better on them than the old tyres and also a good deal quieter, so much for the labels or perhaps they suit the car. No idea if the previous (Yokohama) tyres had labels but they were 10 years old so probably not.

You still have to pay balance and fitting if you buy on line.

Not true for Etyres / Asda tyres, you just turn up at your preferred fitting address and drive off when done. Thats why I've used them for the past 10 years or so.

The only PITA once was the "manager" of one establishment repeatedly attempting to sell me snake-oil nitrogen instead of the free air!!! My attempt at humour went right over his (very thick) head.

Ok final question before I go ahead and replace all 4 tyres...

so my mate has an A4 cabriolet and his tyres are Back: 255/40 and Front: 225/40, same profile front and back. Mine are currently B 255/40 and F 225/45. My brain doesn’t seem to compute why the profiles are bigger on the front and smaller on the back?
All the tyrewebsites after inputting my reg are saying the same, bigger profile in the front.

Is this definitely correct? Apologies if it sounds stupid!!

According to the Michelin website, the correct tyres for a 2011 BMW 320i Coupe (E92) are:

Front: 225/40 R 18

Rear: 255/35 R 18

There are NO other sizes shown for an 18" rim.

www.michelin.co.uk/auto/tyres/michelin-primacy-4#s...s

Edit: Just done a search on the Bridgestone site and for an 18" rim they also come up with exactly the same sizes.

BMW will have spent hundreds or thousands of hours honing handling/ride/comfort/steering, so it’s entirely possible that you’ll have different aspect ratios front to rear. As long as your information is from a trustworthy source - ideally a sticker on the car, or the handbook - go with it.
Going back a long time, the Renault 5 Turbo, the mid-engined one, even had differently speed rated tyres at each end to get the balance as good as it could be.
Your mate potentially has all wheel drive, which will dictate the same tyre diameter on all four wheels.

Great information. Thanks. I’ve been coming across the same sizes when I search through the reg on the tyre sites although you can manually type the sizes.
I don’t know if the rims now are the same as when rolled off the line, although they may be?
Searching online the rims currently on it are the 18” BMW Star Spoke 189.
The OEM is 6768859
I’ve tried mailing BMW customer service but still waiting to hear back!

Just a bit worried if I follow the recommended 35 on front & 40 on back instead of like for like of what’s currently on there 40 back/ 45 front that I’ll feel the bumps and holes much more and the visual look against the arch mayy look too small. I like the look of the wheel filling the arch!
I suppose so as long as going against all the tyre site recommendations online wouldn’t cause an undue problem to the tyres it would be ok? After all they may be advising on different factory rims.
My mates A4 isn’t all wheel but it is an S-line so maybe that’s the reason they’re the same front and back.
