Manual Car Showing as Auto? - ABZNorm

I have ordered a Merc A Class online and I am collecting on Sunday.

The dealers main listing and Autotrader ad said Manual, the pics show a gear stick and clutch pedal but doing a check on the car it states Automatic. Same when I get insurance details.

So, a bit confused!

In the technical spec it says gears:7, transmission:semi auto

I have often seen cars on Autotrader listed as being auto when they are manual and vice versa, so that in itself is not unusual.

The fact that the pics show a manual can also be explained by the photo's being 'stock' or 'library' rather than the actual car. Though if that were the case, I'd expect there to be a statement pointing out that the pics weren't of the 'actual car'.

What is entirely inexplicable to me is that, despite all this confusion, you have gone ahead and ordered the car without establishing for sure whether or not it is auto or manual!!!

All the various listings said the car was manual, the photos and the video the salesman sent me were of a manual. It was only when I went to change the insurance it came up as an auto.

Ring the dealership, get an email address. Email them with your question and get a reply in writing. I’m assuming it’s a used car?

Exactly, it would have taken minutes to contact the dealer and clarify whether the car was manual or auto before placing the order!.

Statistically it is much more likely to be an auto, especially if it is a longer car. If you look at 2017 onwards A Class on Autotrader, there are more than 3 auto's for each manual available.

Exactly what I did when it came to my attention last night.

unsurprisingly no one at the dealership called me back. The sales guy has been off but is back tomorrow so will get it sorted tomorrow. Yes, it is a used car.

Not driven an A Class - is the third pedal a foot operated parking brake?

Brilliant suggestion!

Parking brake is electric on recent A class. No lever or pedal.

Just noticed the typo!, that should say 'younger car', not 'longer car'.

Semi auto usually refers that the car can be driven as a manual. So the car will be auto and would normally be more expensive like for like than a manual.

I wouldn't read too much into the term 'semi-auto', It might have started out as meaning one thing in particular, but it doesn't now, and hasn't done for ages.

Apart from EV's, I can't think of any auto which can't be driven as a manual, regardless of whether T/C, CVT, or DCT.

The OP says in his post the description is semi auto so that's it its an auto /manual!

Yes, but as I said, that doesn't actually mean anything. If it has three pedals it is a manual, if it has two pedals, it can be driven as a manual (in so far as the gears can be selected by the driver).

For the record, assuming it is not one of the old style A Class's (which I think were CVT), the auto is a DCT.

That's somewhat meaningless as almost all modern automatics can be driven in "tiptronic" mode.

What's the difference between an auto licence and a manual one? I should imagine that if it ain't got a clutch pedal, it's an auto.

What's the difference between an auto licence and a manual one?

Its simple. If you have a manual licence you can drive auto and manual, on an auto licence you can only drive an auto.

I've had a quick look for a legal definition of an automatic, and it just seems to be whether or not the driver controls the clutch.

Does it specify whether the driver controls the clutch with the foot or the hand? In our 'automatics' I can disengage the engine from the gears by putting the lever into 'N'.
