What is the best product for applying to rubber seals around windows etc to protect them from "cracking" and general wear and tear. Petroleum Jelly??

I would use a silicone based product, such as ArmorAll protectant, or any other dashboard type cleaner, for example.

Halfords do a proper rubber lubricant spray. Usually found in a yellow can in their motorbike section.
This is what all the Rover Coupe owners use on their rubber seals for the glass roof panels to stop squeeks and any cracking.
Good stuff.

I remember when JC complained that the roof on his 355GTS squeaked, the Ferrari dealer told him to put Vaseline on it....

Yes, Armor-all Protectant is very good.
I saw it advertised years ago in "Cycle World" and "Cycle" the American motorcycle mags.
You can even use it on CV joint rubber boots and it keeps them supple and pliable.
Dashboards come up nice and clean but a bit shiny.
