So: the Government proposes to levy a charge on motorists according to mileage driven. Maybe I'm thick, but isn't there a highly profitable system already in existence to do this? I thought it was called fuel tax.

I wouldn't mind paying per mile once the money we are already paying in exorbitant taxes is spent on the matters for which it collected.
A charge per mile system is
a Going to be run by the Government
b.Going to be heavily reliant on technology and computers.
Can any members of the BR think of ANY government project depending on these things that has ever come in on time, on budget and has worked in the end? Ones that haven't and are an ongoing laughter-zone are the Passport Office, the Child Support Agency, DVLA, the Criminal Records Agency and Identity Cards are yet to come! They will NEVER EVER track and charge every vehicle on the road efficiently. PS What about our guest drivers from across the waters? I see a lot of people registering their cars abroad, like Eddie Stobart has with his lorries.

And if it is then that is flying in the face of everything David Begg etc (like him or loathe him) is saying.
i.e. it should be INSTEAD of some of the current taxation, e.g. ved disc AND ONLY in place when the integrated public transport is in place to give a real choice. Read Begg's report enlightening I thought.

Trouble with reports like this is the govt. then cherry-pick and add in their own interpretation with the nett result that everyone loses except them, and their friends.

I have been working on a project for a social services department. it should have taken me 6 months to do, but because the people who i am doing the work for are so busy, and don't have time for me, i am still here 11 months later.

You're not doing too badly. I was called in as a consultant on a project for a Govmt Dept. last year. I estimated the job at a month and quoted accordingly. It took 8 because of their general apathy and lack of 'real world' knowledge. So I was paid for 8 months instead of one. I wish I could get work like that all the time!!

The money has to come from somewhere. It is either these new schemes that they dream up or income tax. To be honest it is also quite a fair way of doing things (pay as you go). I realise that we all pay a fortune in fuel tax, but the Gov cannot increase this too much more as the votes will suffer.
It is a good idea, if you are a high earner as the money isn't coming from your income tax bill. Bad for most other people.

I think the way their cunning minds work is to leak out something scary like CGT on selling your house, or in this case 50p a mile road 'pricing', and then when they actually do introduce the new [always additional] tax in slightly less horrible format hopefully the voters [that's us minus FiF] will feel relieved, shrug and say "'spose it could have benn worse"

Didn't the government say that cars were too expensive, and that they should be cheaper so that more people can own one? If so, why do they now propose taxing the people they "helped" get a cheaper car and gain mobility, pay more taxes....
