Specification of Peugeot 306 xsi - novicejon
I have read that in April 1997 the 2.0 xsi engine changed from an 8 valve to a 16 valve. Does anyone know if the 8 valve was still available after this date?
The reason I am asking is because I am looking at an xsi at the moment which is an S Reg, meaning it was built in 1998 however the owner believes that it is the 8 valve version.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations as to which of the two engines is better, more reliable?

Thanks again

I've got an 8v XSi, but a bit older (1996). The 16 valve version was badged the S16 on the pre-facelift models, but i am not aware that this changed with the facelift. Don't know for certain though, sorry!

The 16v in the XSi is the 135 bhp engine that also went into 406's and later Xantias etc. Its not the same engine as the S-16 engine.

The 16v unit is a newer design than the 8v. The 8v is a torquey engine though runs out of puff just before 6k rpm, the 16v pulls all the way to the redline, though peak torque is delivered later.

They are both reliable engines though I suspect that the 8v is slightly more fuel effficient. Easy way to tell is look under the bonnet. If it is a mass of pipes with a black box centre rear with a lion in it its an 8 valve, if there is a more substantial looking cam cover then it is a 16v.

i must say that having driven 8v and 16v golf gti's in the past, the 8v had more torque lower down, which was one of the reasons for buying the 8v XSi. It's a cracking engine too, i don't tend to rev engines that hard, so prefer something with peak torque lower down, even if it is at the expense of top end power.

Try the 306 HDI then, get it chipped if it isn't fast enough for you!

Petrol Peugeots? No thanks....but they make excellent little oil-burners though!

Why don't you phone Peugeot Customer services - If you give them the registration they'll tell you what type engine is fitted.

I have rung my local dealer and they have said that once the 16 valve engine was introduced you could no longer get the 8 valve version.

Thanks for all your help

Don't rule out the possibilty of any dealer selling a car that has been sat around in some airfield in France or wherever.

When a car model production is stopped it always overlaps the new model. Teh only exception to this is when the type of car in question is built to order.

novice - you can tell unequivocally which engine you have from the VIN, which should be etched on the windscreen and the tailgate glass if they are both original - or it will be on the Reg.Doc. or in the car handbook. The first three characters are VF3 (for Peugeot), the next six are the model code, and the last eight are the vehicle number. Your model code should be 7CRFX- for the 8-valve or 7CRFV- for the 16-valve.
