hesitation on zetec escort R reg - James38
Hi,

Have a problem with my escort 97R, it hesitates between 2 to 3k revs when cold and accelerating, this happens intermittently, I\'ve changed the plugs but this is still happening, occasionally it happens when it\'s hot but not very often,

Any ideas?

thanks

I have something similar with my 1.25 Zetec-SE in my Fiesta (also 97R) (see thread Zetec-s hesitancy AND cambelt service).

My problem is not, however, intermittent and it occurs predominantly in 4th gear upon hard acceleration between 3500-4000rpm.

I have since changed the plugs and leads to Ford Motorcraft ones, and had a full oil change.

The car is currently at the local Ford garage where they are doing some "Diagnostics test" which is gonna set me back 40quid!

Has anyone had these tests before, and are they of any use??!?

Moby.

James - change the HT leads and air filter as well. If they're original they're getting on a bit, so it's likely to be preventative maintenance even if it doesn't fix the problem.

Moby - diagnostics tests involve them plugging the engine ECU into the computer and reading fault codes. It may help, it may not, but it's £40 that could otherwise be spent many times over on a wild goose chase.

Fair point.

Thinking out loud, would a clogged fuel filter cause my problem? I initially thought it might have, although if the car coninues to accelerate after the slight hesitancy is can't surely be clogged...

The more I think about it the more confused I get!

Will let you all know the result of the diagnostic test.

Had an intermittent hesitation on my R reg Escort particularly after crawling in traffic. I changed the potentiometer because I figured it must do a lot of work and would probably want changing before I get rid of the car. Lucky guess it cured the problem. In your position I would like to have the Lambda sensor checked. This is another part I would be happy changing after a few years wether it was playing up or not. If it was down to me I would change some sensors as a service item anyway. You only have to look at the number of posts with Idle valve problems to wonder why the garages do not change them after a certain mileage

Posted this up around 5weeks ago but have had no luck fixing it, can you help!?, It's only hesitating at 1900RPM and is fine at all other Rpm's

Had a AA man plug in his diagnostic equipment into it but will not read my ECU!,

Help!

My R-reg Fiesta with 1.4 Zetec engine had the same problem. It started doing it at about 2000 RPM but eventually exhibited the hesitation almost anywhere in the rev range - always when accelerating.
Never really got a definitive answer to it but the fault would always disappear completely for a couple of thousand miles after each service. I suspect a sticking valve or two which would be cleaned up (temporarily) by the petrol treatment they used to shove in the tank as part of the service.

Morning,

I recently had a hesitation at 1900 rpm and replaced the throttle position sensor a day ago,(had put it on this site) my car has been running great until this morning when i stalled it twice pulling away,

since that happened now it\'s hesitating up to 2000rpm and is misfiring around 2000rpm quiet badly

can you help!

Thanks for any replies

James, you don't make it clear if you have changed the HT leads as suggested?
