I agree, and of course you`ll be effectively clocking it, since no miles would be recorded!

PR: When my speedo went squiffy the Nissan dealership replaced it with a new one with zero miles on it. I was surprised they didn't wind it on to the correct value. S'pose the mechanic couldn't be bothered to spend several hours winding the clock round.

A speedometer is a legal requirement.
Not strictly true. It depends on the age of the vehicle. A colleague has several vintage motorcyles that don't even have lights, let alone speedo's!! Mind you, some of them are pre 1920's ;o)

First used before 1st October 1937 to be exact.

Road Vehicles (Con and Use) Regs 1986
Reg 35(2) (h) permits the use alone of a Tachometer (The Spy in the Cab) instead of a speedo providing it is marked with the Approval Mark and complies with the Community Recording Equipment Regs.(Without going there seem to recall something about the need for one to be calibrated and sealed every couple of years - fairly expensive???)
Until such time as it is fitted then a Speedo is required and which must be maintained in good working Order.
Journeys with a defective speedo are permitted when the defect occurred during the current journey, or as a result of the defect it has ceased to be in good working order and steps have been taken to have the vehicle equipped with all reasonable expedition, by means of repair or replacement, with an instrument which is in good working order. (Reg 36 (2))
So from what you say running without one is strictly, illegal, unless of course the one fitted developed a fault that necessitated removal and time to get the other fitted?.

... or do you mean a Rev Counter, which alone is illegal as speedo has to record speed in mph/kph.?

"Reg 35(2) (h) permits the use alone of a Tachometer (The Spy in the Cab) instead of a speedo providing it is marked with the Approval Mark and complies with the Community Recording"
Surely not DVD - a Tachograph perhaps - different animal.

I have a Road Angel which tells me my speed using some GPS trickery. Could this be used instead of a conventional speedo?
|
If the vehicle was originally fitted with a speedometer then a working speedometer is a legal requirement. If it did not have a speedo in the first place then the vehicle is probably exempt from the requirement (This might not be so in every case - but as a gneral rule - yes).
|
|
I keep seeing the ads for Road Angels, any good? Its not that I want to speed I want a device to warn me if I exceed any speed limit.
|
Road Angel will not warn you if you are over the limit but will give you advanced warning of any fixed cameras, therefore giving you time to review your speed.
There is one GPS detector that warns you if you are over the limit (Cannot remember the make).
As a point of interest the spedos on both my yais and vw seem to over-read by the same amount ie 32mph is a true 30, 43mph is 40.

Hi
Thanks for all your responses.
OK, OK I haven't been out with no speedo fitted, and I don't think I will now I know the swap is fairly straightforward with speedo cable concerned.
However, I'm going up to see my girlfriend tomorrow and it's a little bit dicey whether i'm going to have all the electronics hooked up by then. Is there anything else, besides the speedo and odometer, that needs to be working (fuel guage/indicator's indicator :-S/etc.)
I'm planning to get it all done before I leave, but there's bound to be a little snag :-(.
Regards
Mike Farrow
