As it's a manual, that removes the big stumbling block with the V70.

The D5 motor is very strong. A bit complex because of the twin-turbo set up but the blowers are robust, most problems seem to be niggling vacuum leaks from the various hoses and solenoid actuators which govern the turbos. Main dealer service history shows its had its oil changes on time.

As a 2011 car it will have a DPF, and if it's never been replaced it will be approaching the time when it will be full of ash, so I would check to see if it ever has been replaced and if not, haggle accordingly.

Get a price on the cambelt service too from a Volvo main dealer and price that in to your calculations. If I remember right the accessory drive belt should be done at the same time, I believe the accessory belt can take out the cambelt if it fails).

Thanks Craig.

Thats a bit of a concern about the DPF . Perhaps it can be cleaned out ?

I would imagine this would be the first cam belt change ?

As much as I like these I wouldn’t buy a 9yr old 100k plus DPF equipped modern diesel unless you can afford to cope with major repair bills or the possibility of binning the car. The cam belt is due at 10yrs or 108k, Volvo dealers are actually recommending an overly cautious 6yrs but it is advisable to do it earlier than 10yrs, it’ll cost £350-£400 depending on who does it to replace the belt, tensioner, water pump and the ancillary belt. An injector fails and it’ll be £200, there’s 5 of them which no doubt would go soon after. The DPF is likely to be an issue too if it’s not already been replaced too.

I can’t stress this enough, do not buy a cheap diesel. A thirstier but vastly more reliable petrol would be a far better bet. At this money a petrol Mondeo, Avensis, Accord, Mazda 6 or V70 would be a better buy in my opinion.

Thanks SLO,

Shame as this is a car of known heritage with FMDSR.

But as advised many times By you not suitable for my short runs which are even more infrequent these days.

The car has mostly been used on short runs but has been fine up til now.

I imagine that this will be the first cam belt change as it’s been scheduled for the next service ?

I’m not saying it’s a bad car, far from it and I’m not saying it won’t carry on for another decade and 100k but an older DPF equipped diesel can become a costly money pit very quickly and for every positive story you hear there will be another with plenty of expense involved. These are great cars and the D5 motor has great command over the body with loads of go but don’t buy it if you can’t afford the occasional big bill. You may be lucky and it’ll run and run without worry but I’d err on the side of caution and go petrol. As you probably know I own a D5 XC60 but mine has 45k up and sees a regular long(ish) run.

Workhorse, quite nice to drive, eats the miles, swallows luggage, My 2008 auto is on 144k and does all sorts of trips, short, medium, long. Back seat down and you have a huge cargo bay, economy is excellent if you don't leather it. Just had the cam belt done and the water pump, a good run keeps the dpf clear. Look around and you see loads of early ones going strong. Use an indie for servicing etc as main dealers are expensive.

Hi Barney,

Thanks for your comments . Is that the first cam belt change you have had done ?

Nice car and possibly a bit of a bargain at that price. If it is a SE Lux buy it quick. Only thing against is that it is a manual which the market doesn't like as much.

I have never, ever come across the slightest issue with the DPF on one of these and seen them still going strong at 200k+ on the original one.

Cambelt is dirt cheap - 1.2-1.5 hours book time plus about £80 parts. However, yes, the aux belt and tensioner should be done at the same time which probably adds about £100.

If it is the 205bhp D5 will go well. Never replaced an injector on one either.

I would be very, very tempted myself.

When I bought it around 65,000 miles it had had a belt change from a main dealers which I checked out. A quick look at the Volvo owners club high mileage club and to some of them mine is hardly run in.
