2015 Ford Kuga 1.5l ecoboost petrol - Ford Kuga 1.5 ecoboost - noisy engine when idling - Michae_l

Engine is making a loud grinding/rattling noise at idle, most noticeable from outside the car. Other than this the car is still driving normally. From looking under the bonnet it seems to be coming from the drive belt on the drivers side of the engine, could be alternator bearings are shot? Is this a known problem? Car has done 82000 miles. What else does this belt drive?

thanks for any help!

Take the belt off and have a look to see what's rattling/loose?

Yes, doesn’t look totally straightforward compared to when I used to muck about with cars 25 years ago.... but maybe it is?

Might be the belt tensioner. I've mistaken that for a noisy alternator bearing not so long ago. Luckily when the belt slipped enough to prevent the engine running, it didn't damage anything else.

Firstly, I would check to see if there is adequate oil in the engine . Removing the polyvee drive belt is no easy task unless you are under the car. Some Ford models have a stretchy belt , so no tensioner as such . The belt has to be cut off.

Think the onboard computer would tell me if the oil is low but checked it anyway - ok. Think its going to be a garage job from what you are saying, I’m reasonably handy with the spanners but car’s are getting too complex....

Cars probably are getting too complex, but "the belt has to be cut off" goes beyond that into the area of evil.

Turns out it was the water pump driven by the timing belt...
