Hyundia Sante Fe SE 2015 Decemeber 14k miles one - TPMS and 4 wheel tracking, 2 questions - Melly Goldsman

Hello

I have the above car, 2 questions please.

The warning light came on the tpms a couple of weeks ago and now two more.

I will phone the car makers re warranty but doubt if the tpms is included as it appears the battery have run out. But you think they are covered as low miles and used on 300 mile round trips only so not driven for many hours. My husband has a Mercedes ML, 2014 bought new, 20k on the clock and tpms still working.

We have looked on the web for prices. Are there any you recommend, please? What is the difference? The front tyres may need changing ealry next year but I thought I'd get them done now as tyres need to be taken off.

About tracking, we looked at kwikfit and they are asking for over a 100 pounds do we need all 4wheels tracked as rear ones are wearing out evenly. - car pulling to the left slightly and we checked air pressures are ok. Wearing on the outside of front passenger side and less so on the other side.

The car is a permanent 4 wheel drive.

We were looking on the web and sites suggest that the tpms usually lasts 5 to 8 years.

Thanking you in advance.

I'd say that was perfectly normal. They wear like that due to the camber of the road. You could try swapping the wheels side to side, as long as they aren't directional, or front to back if they are.

As it's permanent 4WD, do you need to change all four tyres together? The handbook should tell you. Another good reason the swap the tyres front to rear to even the wear and reduce the workload of the centre diff.

Does that mean the tyres need pumping up?

Firstly, as far as I am aware a Santa Fe is not permanent 4wd, it is an on demand system but can be locked in 4wd at low speeds.

The failure of batteries in TPMS sensors has nothing to do with mileage or usage, they are non rechargable batteries located within the sensors in the wheels. Your warranty will now have expired and I doubt they would have been covered by it anyway. I have a 2015 Sorrento and mine are all working with the original batteries- I now look forward to their expensive failure!

Thank you.

Update.

I was surprised that they said the tpms was covered by the warranty but then I pressured up all 3 tyres and everything is ok. Odd that all three sent low pressure warning within a few weeks of the other.

About the car not being a perma 4 wheel drive, its not two wheel drive but I think I know what you mean. The two rear tyres are still in good shape and front have worn and getting them replaced tomorrow.

Re pressure drop in three tyres it may simply be due to colder weather. Three tyres may have been close to the limit, you get a colder night, lose a couple of PSI and the warning is triggered.

Re tyre tread depth. If you read the manual there should be a section on tyre care. Many 4x4 vehicles have instruction to rotate the tyres at periodic intervals to even wear across all 4 tyres. On my vehicle it is a diagonal change - front to opposite back at every service. It then means all four tyres are changed at the same time.

This is to prevent expensive problems with the 4x4 system.

If tyres are directional, many winter tyres are, then the "rotation" can only be front-back as the tyres can only be used on one side of the car, unless they're refitted on the rim.

If the advice is a diagonal swap you don't fit directional tyres,
