Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Fullchat

Dear Kia

In July 2019 I took my Sportage for a 2 year 20K service to a local dealership. It was a nice experience and the coffee good The wash and vacuum saved me a job.

When I got home I ran through the items that had been serviced and found the following and took pictures. If you'd like to see them there is a comprehensive feature here:

www.kiaownersclub.co.uk/threads/brakes-bled-or-not...3

The dealership Manager was unable to tell from the photos and despite his investigations there was nothing to suggest as to why the brake fluid change had been omitted but charged for. However after a considerable amount of my time and email ping pong he did agree a refund. There was another issue on another vehicle re an MOT failure which could have generated £400 worth of work, as once before, when there was nothing wrong but we'll park that.

Just a suggestion. Maybe the car washers should be re-deployed to the workshops they seem far more conscientious.

So a year later its service time again and I haven't done many miles - 25K. So I book it in to another dealer a bit further away. I have even bought a few cars from them. You do provide an internet booking service which saves quite a considerable amount and you offered me a 3 year 30K service for £79 or a 20K 2 year service (which still needed completing). So I booked for the latter since I got some money back last time.

I spoke to the nice lady in reception and told her why I had booked what seemed like an unnecessary service. Due to Covid I was not able to avail myself of the hospitality but I did get a Covid temperature check. A couple of hours or so later I got a call to say "It was all done"

So like a good customer I paid my dues and left. I thought I'd check my vehicle first.

Again if you'd like to see another gripping feature with pictures look no further. Sorry about the quality but i was fighting with bright sunlight:

www.kiaownersclub.co.uk/threads/dealer-servicing-e...2

So once again we enter into a long debate as to why I am wrong (and not qualified) to even suggest that those brakes have been bled. But eventually the very kind Service Manager agreed for "..my peace of mind" to 'redo' - oh yes!! the brake bleeding. Thank you I'm so grateful and my mind is at peace that £279 has been well spent. It also allowed me the opportunity to take pictures of those bleed screws in a condition they would be if the work was done. Well well, what a difference.

I've removed the sump tray and it doesn't look like its been removed because all the dirt that fell out would have fallen out at the time of service. The sump plug definitely has not been removed but I understand you have this new fangled machine that sucks out the oil leaving the crap in the bottom. Does it suck out the oil filter cartridge out of its housing as well because that doesn't look like its been touched?

Before leaving the dealership I dipped the oil as well. The engine was very hot. I hope he enjoyed the ride. I was wondering if they put black dye in the oil so you can see it on the dipstick because this oil was very very black.

So my question is KIa. Where the **** can I go to get a full service honestly completed, for which I am paying, and without someone else deciding what can be omitted from the service schedule so that I can be shafted.

Kind Regards

PS I think there may be some literacy issues as the Technicians just seem to tick everything on the list regardless as to the relevancy to that vehicle.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - gordonbennet

Nice to see you kicking about Fullchat.

I have no ownership experience of Kia or Hyundai, and judging from this tale the chances of me ever doing so have lessened.

My experience of brake work at main dealers (cos i'm a poor lorry driver only able to afford old cast off motors :-) is limited to Toyota, when our Hilux went in at 2 years for its first major service all pads were removed and so were the rear drums for clean and lube up, they themselves suggested to leave the brake fluid renewal for another year due to low mileage, they also never failed to change the oil.

Filthy oil immediately after change is quite common on some engine designs, Diesels especially, there must be lots of oil traps within some engines, i still have a Toyota Diesel 4x4 with the same engine as that Hilux and even with over 100k miles on the clock the engine oil stays clean for nearly 1000 miles after change, on Daughters BMW 320 Diesel you couldn't tell it had been changed 5 minutes later.

However, i'm a little shocked by those pics FC, espcially the ones taken at 2 years old, have you been parking it in the sea? i'd expect that amount of brake caliper corrosion at 12 years not 2.

This is a sorry tale and i hope someone at Kia head office is spitting bullets reading your posting on the Kia forum, especially as Kia have a reputation of only accepting Kia main dealer servicing to keep warranty intact.

Still servicing my own cars, doubtful i shall ever bother with a car new enough to have to risk the main dealer workshop lottery again, predictably Toyota are one of the very few i would choose.

Hi GB

Still kicking :) Hope you are well.

Realistically brake fluid can be left for longer but if its on the service sheet and itemised on my invoice then I want it doing particlarly if i've paid extra and specifically requested it.

They reckon 4 years is about right. BMW motorcycles do a fluid change after a year from new for some reason. Some ABS pumps are a bit fickle about the quality of fluid.

Those pictures were taken in the dusk with flash so it may have highlighted the white bits. All the other components are good so I don't think its been swimming. :)

As for the oil. I've removed the sump tray. The sump plug hasn't been touched so I'm surmising the old oil has been sucked out by machine. having said that they've itemised a sump plug washer. This still leaves residual oil which will contaminate the fresh oil quicker. You are right diesel oil blackens very very quickly.

What really annoys me is that despite clear images they tell me that the work has been completed.

I really doubt Kia mothership is really bothered until such time as it impacts their reputation.

It would seem their reputation has already been "impacted" due to your exposition - well done!

I do know Kia Customer Services visit the Kia websites as occasionally they respond so I'm surmising they will be aware of my issues.

But I'm not expecting an apologetic representative to be knocking on my door offering to make amends anytime soon.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Zippy123

FC, that's terrible. I had a problem with a 2017 Hyundai Tucson DCT Diesel. It died once and then refused to accelerate.

Dealer took it in and got it going again only for the problem to reoccur. They didn't believe the refusal to accelerate until I videoed myself at full throttle going down a steep hill at 50, foot to the floor and nothing. At one point the car changes down and actually gets slower!

Could you let Trading Standards know?

The cars are good, but there are some shocking Kia dealers out there.

I was so disgusted by the dealer who supplied my Sorento, that I had new number plates made up so that I didn't ever have to see their name on my car again.

I've found a small family-owned business near home who now do all my servicing. They've always been completely honest and above board.

(retired Chartered Engineer who also tends to notice when things are not right).

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - _

It seems that there is nothing new in the world regarding dealers lack of servicing correctly/not at all or invoicing for parts not used on customers vehicles but for mechanics own cars.

At one dealership many years ago, we had a specific oil change bay and one day wandering through I spotted about a dozen or so brand new oil filters that had not been changed.

Mechanics doing their own oil changes using cutomers oil, a customer being billed for a new cylinder head so that the mechanic could have the old one for his car,

I was threatened a few time for telling senior management, and even went directly to the dealer principals office once.

I am quite sure that not much has changed.

I detest people that that, sadly these days of the one size fits all those who have decent work ethics and take pride in their work get tarred with the same brush as such low life's, this applies in lots of trades including mine.

It would help if management spent more time on the shop floor seeing what happens instead of patting each other on the back insulated within their ivory tower offices.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - thunderbird

Lets not blame the mechanics entirely, management play a part sometimes.

A Renault dealer local to us lost his franchise when it was discovered they were replacing parts on brand new cars with used ones then selling the new parts on.

Then they got a Datsun franchise and the owner of the garage was prosecuted for assaulting an off duty cop who was looking at one of the cars shortly after the garage had closed for the day, the owners defence was he thought the chap was trying to steal it. Believe it or not shortly after they went bankrupt because local people simply did not trust them. The liquidators had an on-site auction of stock and mate of mine got a brand new Violet (shows how long ago it was) for about 50% of list price, he was delighted as were many other locals that drove away in bargains.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Fullchat

Trading Standards has been alluded to.

I looked into that last time and basically what you get now is a firewall of a centralised call centre with drop down screen menus which give the relevant legal information for you to put in a 'strongly worded letter'

This parts collection by garage staff instead if fitting to vehicles is Theft. The whole process, providing the staff chain were all complicit in some way, could be regarded as theft or fraud but I doubt the Old Bill would be interested. Ideally it would require a van and a few collars felt. That would focus industry minds. The've been allowed to get away with it too long.

In the case I mentioned above about a customer being sold a brand new cylinder head so that the mechanic could use/refurb it for his own car which had a clapped out head, The workshop manager and his son were both sacked (after investigation) and the mechanic was put on notice that it would not be tolerated.

The owner of the business was an honorable man and I also believe that the customers invoice was reduced sunstantially.

At that time I agreed not to report it to the police, although I did ask a neighbour who was a senior Police officer and he said let the dealership deal with it.

One of the many reasons the Datsun brand died was a lot of press in the late 80's when franchises failed, customers lost their deposits and Datsun did nothing to help, leaving customers totally out of pocket. As agents for Datsun, I think a small hit to do the right thing may have seen customers return.

Seeing Octav Botnar owned 200 dealerships and was effectively Datsun UK at the time it didn't seem right.

Octav Botnar's moaning about wholesale and retail pricing to the parent didn't help and Nissan moved in to run the show themselves.

I'm all in favour of mystery shopping--so well done Fullchat for your vigilance. I always trust a garage to do what needs to be done-but sadly at the back of my mind is always the thought that my car is being given no more than cursory glances, an oil and filter change if i'm lucky plus the lengthy carwash/vac out all for a nice cheap £250. If I was allowed( and I wouldn't be would iI?)-I would love to be actually present when my car was being done so I could see for myself just each stage of the process.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Chris79

Sadly my experience of main dealers across the following brands Volvo,Audi,Seat and Vauxhall is largely bad. The last main dealer I had nothing but praise for was a Citroen one and they were basically forced out of business as they wouldn’t invest huge sums of money in a glass palace, apparently the same premises that had served customers well for many years were no longer acceptable.

in no particular order

Audi. Despite producing copious amounts of paperwork including many ticked checklists it became clear that maintenance was a tick box exercise. Tread depths listed that bared no relation to the tyres on the car. Disappointing as the same dealer had only fitted new tyres the previous week but apparently they were down to 4mm already.

At Audi main dealer rates I expect a professional job, sadly it wasn’t forthcoming.

Seat - they insisted I needed brake fluid every two years. When I asked that they checked moisture content and changed if required it was clear they just never bothered.

This was after they registered the car in the wrong name when I bought it and tried to cover it up with a load of tipped on the v5.

Vauxhall - they seem a fan of giving you red advisory’s for things that may need doing. My front pads were worn to 7mm and were subject to a red warning whilst the car was being serviced. Apparently this was neccesary as they didn’t know how many miles I’d be doing between services.

Volvo - whilst in for a service it was identified that the car had a damaged radiator and condenser which required replacement. When it was pointed out that I’d only had the car and short time and it was purchased from them under their selekt used car scheme it was hurriedly decided that as the car was functioning ok no replacement was neccesary. After some discussion they agreed to replace the parts.

the best garage I use is an independent one near us. You get an honest answer, quality service and sensible prices. I’m yet to be offered a cup of coffee or find a flash leather armchair but they do seem to know what they are taking about so I’ll turn a blind eye!

That describes Spot, of Chasetown, to a T who indeed had been there for years. I used to deliver new cars there regularly and from the lovely lady on reception (who always made me a coffee), the long serving senior salesman and the cheerful workshop and parts staff it was always a pleasure visiting, most customers were regulars with many repeat buyers, sad day for many when they closed the doors.

The others apart from your indy sound a dire bunch only interested in emptying your wallet.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Dag Hammar

This subject, from the original post, is something that has also given me concern. I have a car that does few miles per annum and this year because of Covid restrictions it will probably clock up just 1000 miles in twelve months. It is still under the manufacturer's new car warranty and therefore I feel obliged to have the annual service carried out at the main dealer from where it was purchased solely to maintain the warranty.
The engine oil is still as translucent as the day it was put in at the last service and I expect it to look the same in five and a half months time when the next service becomes due.

So when the next service is carried out how will I be able to tell if the garage has actually changed the oil and filter ? The cynic in me thinks that they will take one look at the oil and upon seeing it is so clear they may not bother to change it but will of course charge me for the privilege
Any suggestions from those in the know ? One idea would be to be able to purchase a harmless dye in order to ‘top up’ and colour the oil and then there could be no question as to the oil having been changed.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - mcb100
The overwhelming majority of main dealers have a provision to send videos from technician to customer. If the technician is making good use of his or her time, they’ll do the vehicle health check (and subsequent video) while the oil is draining. So, there on video, will be an oil catch tank under the car.

"Any suggestions from those in the know ? One idea would be to be able to purchase a harmless dye in order to ‘top up’ and colour the oil and then there could be no question as to the oil having been changed."

What I should have done prior to service. Mark up the oil filler cap and oil filter with some sort of marker paint on the thread or join. This has to be done out of the main view of the tecnician as they'll break the mark on purpose. You could use ultra violet marker pen (think post code security marking) if you have a spin off disposable filter or some scratch mark you can identify, Then take some photos.

We shouldn't have to do this though. Alternatively you may be able to negociate a cheap checkover service with no fluid changes for that all important stamp in the book.

You should have agreed for the parts to be changed and then claimed under the warranty!

There was a story of someone going to Kwik Fit for a tyre and they offered a free brake check at the same time. They said new brakes pads were needed.

The owner said fine. Please go ahead. On presenting the bill, the owner passed them their last bill from only a couple of thousand miles ago with a life time warranty on the pads - including free replacement on wear!

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - UPDATE - Fullchat

In my earlier post I alluded to my suspicion regarding the service oil change. I did not mention that I extracted a controlled sample of oil and had it analysed.

Result:

*** 5w30 *** suspected missed oil change *** IRON LEVELS APPEAR HIGH, POTENTIALLY INDICATING LINER WEAR. OTHER WEAR READINGS
ARE WITHIN TOLERANCE. SILICON IS HIGH AND MAY INDICATE EITHER SEAL WEAR, OR DIRT INGRESS. HOWEVER THE VISCOSITY
APPEARS A LITTLE LOW AND APPROXIMATELY 2% FUEL DILUTION IS DETECTED. READINGS INDICATE THE OIL WAS NOT CHANGED.

So there you have it. A £279 service where they have wheeled it onto a ramp, lifted it, recorded a short video stating that a health check had been completed and driven it into the car park. They may have measured the tyres and the brake pads. Thats it.

When I rumbled them for the brake fluid which they vehemently denied all the way up to and including the Service Manager you would have thought that they may have realised that they had been caught out and thought of some lame excuse and cracked on and do what they should have done but no. Totally indifferent and an arrogance. The deceit perpetuates.

I have been in discussions with the Group General Service Manager. They have accepted my allegations. I have had the service completed and although the oil is darkening it is still fresh looking

Kia Customer Services? Platitudes from a Customer Service Rep.stating that it would be passed along for 'internal review' but it is the responsibility of the dealership. Also they had spoken to the dealership Service Manager and he assured them they had changed the brake fluid and engine oil as part of the service. He speak with forked tongue. They may have change the brake fluid when they were rumbled but at that point they had not changed the oil.

Probably didn't count on me getting the oil analysed. They are Contemptious! (Didn't want to spark up the swear filter)

I am impressed with how you operated here Fullchat, well done, caught red handed as it were, in a just world there would be legal implications for this, i hope whoever is actually responsible is severely disciplined.

It's damning that the group service manager has accepted your findings, one must assume an internal inquiry at the dealership has revealed the truth.

If i was the MD of the company (or the maker's MD in this country) you would be having a pre arranged visit from me, a grovelling apology and the guarantee that when you wish to change cars we would offer such a deal you would not be able to refuse, circa not far from a straight swap like for like in the very near future, i'd also be looking at whether the workshops involved is fit to continue with the brand, and i would make arrangements in your favour so you never had to deal with this workshops again.

I've seen how a vehicle maker can rebuild their reputation in the last few years, not something i can go into detail, a high senior figure getting involved going above and beyond to put things right has proved an excellent investment for the maker concerned, they got their act togther in every way and as a direct result have orders now into 6 figures and if they and the product continue performing as they have that will only increase and repeat.

Another maker has forgotten which way round customer and supplier operates, result cheerio.

in years gone by the late FIL took his Rover in for service. he had this thing about rotating the tyres to even the wear. Duly requested this and on getting the car back a charge was on the bill for the job. He'd numbered the tyres on the inside with chalk and guess what, they were all in the same place. Small thing but salutary.

I work as a workshop controller at a Kia dealership..... the brake fluid is scheduled to be changed every two years... not just because its hygroscopic , but also because it ensures that the bleed screws are regularly loosened to make future maintenance possible , and because it prevents a build up of microscopic seal particles that can erode brake seals if left unattended to (applies to ALL brands). All technicians are given a service sheet to work to , and if any are found to have "missed/forgotten/avoided" anything , a warning is automatically applied!!..

As regards the oil , on diesels we have no end of customers saying their new oil is "black"... this will be true , as after the (mandatory) post-service test drive the residue in the engine wil turn the new oil black instantly(not so on petrols)... we always produce a video of the car , showing any current/future issues , and I encourage the technicians to produce this WHILE the oil is draining (rather than "waiting" ) to show the customer a full service is in progress.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Metropolis.
That’s a good approach, I service old cars myself and keep receipts for the genuine parts used like others, but if it went to a main dealer I’d have to install a camera and put discrete markers on the filter and sump plug, having heard so many stories from relatives who have done the same and caught main dealers, I’m pretty sceptical which is sad. Mud sticks!

Presumably on the basis of the change to extended servicing a few years ago was to ensure that cars were perhaps only "seen" once in the warranty period which meant more paying works done after warranty.Don't foget that in our brave new world the motor industry wants us all to do PCP's and suchlike or simply rent, never owning the car and to hell with what happens to it after warranty.

I add that in 2015 I had my rio serviced, overfilled by a good bit with new oil, and the tyre tread measurements all from another vehicle. On protesting politely but firmly complete service was redone..

My last service at a SEAT main dealer threw up a couple of bad points for me. I asked for the adblu to be topped up as it lasts me between services. Picked up the car to be told there is plenty of adblu in my car. A week later the add adblu warning comes up on the dash so I made a trip back to the dealer expecting it to be free for my time and fuel. Nope, that's £20 sir. SEAT's website lists it at only £10. They begrudgingly waved the fee after much arguing. All over something that costs them pennies and they got wrong.

Secondly they had disconnected my dash cam power cable from behind the rearview mirror which wasn't visible to me until I tried to download a clip of an incident. Maybe they should add another item to their ticksheet to reconnect power before handing back to the customer.

Kia Sportage 2017 - Dear Kia - Fullchat

Thats good to hear Targen. I need a workshop that actually does what I pay for.

And yes a fluid change does allow the bleed screws to be cracked open to stop them rusting in place. All basic maintenance stuff really.

Actually that brings me to another issue alongside the Sportage at its '2 year no brake fluid change service'. At the same time I had a 63 plate Picanto in for some other work but let them conduct the MOT and service. It failed on rear brake to caliper brake pipes 'excess corrosion'

A family member had been bitten by this once before and charged over £400 to have the pipes replaced. So this time I declined the offer to allow me the opportunity to inspect. Once home a quick clean off of the road dirt and peeling manufacturers coating and all was good with an MOT pass at a local garage.

My point being apart from another con job was the service documentation. The MOT had been conducted before the service. Where you would have thought a technician would have examined an cleaned the pipes in preparation for the MOT.

The accompanying service also stated 'brake fluid change not completed bleed nipple replacement required' Doesnt make it clear how many bleed nipples.. Were they assuming that I'd fall for the brake pipe scam in which case the fluid would be changed. Or , as they had been the sole servicers from new, were they now concerned that as they had been failing to complete fluid changes when specified that those bleed screws were liable to cause them grief??

In any event my local conducted a fluid change along with the MOT and no dramas.

The Sportage and my old Venga both need firm but gentle pressure to close the bonnet.

I had the same problem on each car and both times it was explained.

Just needs to be checked afterwards.

The Venga came undone, but still latched after going over a speed bump. so just slightly open..

In 11 years with Kia I cant recall EVER having to advise or replace corroded brake pipes on any Kia under 10 years old...also. bleed nipples either unscrew for a fluid change , in which case they are fine , or they are siezed in , in which case usually a new caliper is required , not just the nipple!! Again , we would always advise individual item (s) were the problem , not just generalise. As regards the order.. MOT then service or.vice versa..our rule of thumb is to MOT older (over 6 year old) cars BEFORE the service , in case it needs money spent to pass the MOT that the customer may not be able to afford alongside the service. Otherwise we MOT/service cars randomly as time constraints mean our MOT ramp has to be in constant operation..especially now. (Currently booking MOT tests a month ahead!!). As an aside....was your 63 plate Picanto not still under the 7 year warranty?? Corroded /MOT failure brake pipes/siezed bleed screws (on a regularly serviced car) would be covered

Not all that uncommon to find a bad mechanic who either through laziness doesn’t do the job he’s paid to do or through dishonesty steals the parts and fluids that should’ve found their way into your car for his own or for a homer. We had some trouble with this but anyone found out not to be doing the job correctly was sacked on the spot.

What irritates me more here is the attitudes of the service managers who refuse to accept the possibility that the job hasn’t been done right. I’ll give a dealer one chance to deal with a complaint then I upgrade it to the manufacturers customer services team who’ve yet to fail me on any car I’ve had the need. That said, it’s rare I’ve had a new enough car for that to be an issue but backstreet garages have plenty of dishonest staff and owners too. Not all of course, many are good but the motor trade is full of rogues and fly guys to this day.

It is down to how well they deal with issues - I trust my local independent because on the 2 occasions in 30 years when there's been an issue, they've dealt with it instantly to rectify the matter.

With my last 2 new cars I've been messed around by workshop reception staff, mainly as they refuse to accept that any customer knows anything about cars - but in both cases their service managers listened to my side of the story and then sorted it out.

To the OP;
Would this by any chance have been an Arnold Clark Kia dealer?

Oddly, two towns I visited early summer last year for work and was pleasantly surprised at. People were very friendly.
