Subaru Forester 2.5XT - Stainless Steel exhausts., M I J Walsall - gordonbennet

Had a stainless exhaust custom made and fitted to the Subaru today, OE system was 12 years old and developed a slight leak from the flange gasket between the two main sections, whilst attempting to replace this gasket it soon became apparent the two sections were past their best as the welds on the sections either side started to crack up.

Knowing the dealer cost of a new exhaust for our previous Subaru ( a cool grand) i didn't even bother ringing Subaru, so once again drove up to the fine people that run MIJ exhausts at Walsall, who in just under 3 hours made an excellent stainless system and fitted it, all for just under £300 with a lifetime guarantee, which is exactly £50 cheaper than the typical factor supplied and fitted mild steel system would have cost, and that would have been the wrong system anyway because they try to pass off the smaller bore system of the 2.0 litre NA engine as being suitable for the turbocharged XT, it isn't.

So, once again, MIJ at Walsall have come up trumps, this is the 2nd system they've made and fitted for us, much quicker today, last time they were very busy and it was a long long day indeed, nice people who do a good job at a very fair price (not sure how they do it for the price), i have no connection to the company other than as a satisfied, twice, customer who will always use them for such work in the future.

Have tried to leave a review in the good garage guide, above, but the site froze when i tried to submit.

Seems an incredibly competitive price GB!, that the whole system?.

Thanks for this helpful post, GB. I shudder to think how much a repair would cost if my nearly 15yrs old 'forever car' A8 W12 developed an exhaust leak in one of its extensive convolutions. I have book-marked their site for possible future reference.

That's one heck of a good deal...some while back I looked into getting a S/S cat back system for my V6 Estima and was quoted £550 PLUS Vat...that was a reputable outfit in Nottingham.

Made me consider going aluminised rather than stainless.

Made me consider going aluminised rather than stainless.

As far as I remember that was just a con for getting people to spend more on a mild steel system that looked a bit shinier. Once the weather attacked them they went rusty especially on the wels and inside they rusted just like the standard mild steel system.

Considering that the last time we bought any exhaust part was back in about 2004 (back box on an 8 year old Golf) I would not bother. We had all 3 Focus's over 10 years and never touched the system on any.

Was only a consideration ,,,down to price.....and any exhaust I may put on will be by choice not necessity.

Like you, I haven't had to replace an exhaust system in years.

I agree -- don't exhausts tend to last well so long as they don't have an exclusive diet of short runs that bothers the insides? My previous car (Citroen) was on its original-everything (apart from DPF) in the exhaust system at nearly 16 years old.

Cracking price, GB.

I remember getting a system made for my car in 1998 that wouldn't have cost a great deal less.

If I remember, the NA engine is 2 inches, turbo 2.5 inches.

I noticed that you put an owners review in on the car GB, and mentioned wind noise, something that all the models with frameless windows suffer from. There is a cheap fix that might work if you haven't already tried it. Take off the interior plastic triangular shaped trim where the door mirror bolts to the door, it just pops off. The window runs through a rubber seal in this area. There is a fairly malleable metal frame inside the seals that hold them in situ. You can get some molgrips or water pump pliers, protect the jaws from the rubber with a rag, then gently squeeze both sides of the rubber seal along it's length until you close the gap that the window runs through, this opens up over time and can cause much of the wind noise.

It's never going to be saloon car quiet, but the above made a welcome difference to mine.

Thinking about exhausts the last car we had that had numerous (annual in reality) exhausts was a 1989 Nissan Bluebird.

The exhaust failed just after its 3rd birthday and was treated to a new shiny one with a 2 year warranty. That failed after a year and was replaced FOC by the garage. That failed just over a year later but we had to pay for a new one since the guarantee started from buying the first one and not the free replacement. That one failed a year later and was replaced FOC. We had the car just over a year on that exhaust but it was getting very tatty on the body, the radiator needed replacing and it had low compression on one cylinder. the last thing we needed was a bill for another exhaust so it went in PX against the Golf mentioned in my earlier post which only had one box box in 10 years.

Thanks for the tip re wind noise Corax, i'll take a poke nose see what's what, and yes you are right at 2 and 2.5", the 2" system sitting by my indy's ramp looked a right sorry thing for £350, it was MrB on the Subaru forum who reminded me literally the day before it went in about checking bore sizes, phew.

BBD, it's a full CAT back system, the OE system is two piece with a silencer in each section, they didn't disturb the flange joint behind the CAT, instead cut the old exhaust off just behind said flange and welded the new pipe in, chap reckons that joint will last a good few years before anything needs doing, had he tried to undo that joint the chances are a new CAT would have been on the cards.

If that centre joint hadn't started leaking chances are the OE exhaust would have seen several years more yet as the silencers were still strong, but once you start moving things about its the welds that prove weakest.

Yes they offer very good value, well worth the time and travel, other quotes for SS systems have been twice or thrice the sum i paid, as a bonus half a mile up the road is an indy LPG site where i filled up @ 45p per litre, and for those thinking of doing the same when their pipes start falling apart :-) theres 3 decent cafes within quarter mile and a really large park about 400 yards away by the canal for doggie time if you have hounds, MIJ are 5 mins from M6 jct 9.

John F, i suspect the cost for a new exhaust on your barge might make those Subaru prices look quite bargainous.

I have been thinking that our old L200 pick up will need a new exhaust before long. A company called Cybox ( I think they used to be called Peco) make an off the shelf s/s system at not much more cost than a standard exhaust plus about £100. Has anybody any experience of them and their products?

This is not an advert!

Barge....??!! You mean Aquarama Riva, I presume :) And yes.......

Meisterschaft Stainless GTC Exhaust Audi A8 W12 Quattro 03-09. $3,498.00 Sale:$3,323.10. Buy in monthly payments with Affirm on orders over $50.

......whereas the Rimmer SS exhaust for my TR7 cost £146.49 inc vat and delivery charge in 1992. Fitted locally, can't remember how much that cost as (unlike me) no record in service history. Still shiny and intact.

I haven't spoken to him personally on that forum, but have taken advantage of MrB's experience via other members, he is an excellent mine of information regarding Scoobs.

Hi GB,
Just wondering what bore they put together for you? 2.5 or 3 inch? I heard 3" drops off the torque unless the car is heavily modded.
Mine is a standard 2.5 XT (SG) and looking to do the same thing as you, so thank you for posting this! :-)

Oops...! Just spotted the conversation about ensuring it was 2.5". Thanks all the same :-)

Oops...! Just spotted the conversation about ensuring it was 2.5". Thanks all the same :-)

I had the noise discussion with the gaffer at MIJ, didn't want loud, wanted efficient.

He suggested going 2.25", reason being the stainless silencers are less restrictive than OE ans going 2.5 would boom more, i took his advice...i start work at unearthly hours and didn't want something noisy.

Result is the exhaust sounds lovely, as you know with a Forester XT you don't normally get the Subaru burble due to equal length manifolds, but with the new system there is now a subdued scooby sound which is really rather pleasant (even at my age), the car is also running extremely well and seems to pull better than ever, and i'm wondering if the old system was suffering an internal silencer issue because it runs so much better now, tickover once warm and the aux air pump has done its thing you can barely hear it running, at motorway speeds there's no booming, but you can hear it really throaty (not unpleasantly) if you let her loose, perfect.

If you want a 2.5" tail exit pipe the lads will put one on for you, or any design you wish, they have lots to choose from, extra cost is minimal.

I have the 2.25 all the way through including the tail pipe, it looks absolutely standard so keeps the anonymous looks of the car, which is so much part of its charm.

Enjoy your day out anyway, please come back and let us know how it goes.
