Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - JohnX

A good friend of mine who is an NHS key worker has had his Landrover Discovery Sport stolen from his driveway 4 days back.
The tracker showed the location as being taken 2 miles away from his house and we went on the same night (and the police came at the same time)and scoured the area on the same night, but no car.

He had paid for the tracker subscription until December 2020 yet on calling Landrover on the night and the next morning, they were of no help.
We have been going around the area(London) for the last 3 days in the hope that it may be left abandoned ,but no luck so far.

However his Landrover app is now communicating with the car (from yesterday) and it shows that the car has moved another 0.8 miles yesterday and 2.5 miles today, all at night after 10 pm.

He can communicate with the car even now , and switch on the lights/horn and lock and unlock the car even now and paperwork shows that the car apparently has a sim of some sort which is probably why the information is being relayed to his phone via the app.
Yet Landrover continue to be of no help! and I get the feeling he isnt talking to the right person who can help.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do now?

Have asked him not to switch off and on the lights temporarily since this might alarm the thieves(pardon the pun)
Pics attached of the journeys the car has undertaken since the theft(which was on 12th July at 23.51 hours when the car was taken 2.3 miles away)

Yes, leave it to the insurance company and police, it isn't your friends responsibility to recover his own stolen car.

I think you may be right, just Googled 'ibb' and the fourth result was some kind of scam alert. So suggest nobody click on the 'links'!

Fair enough.

Still strikes me a wee bit odd that the OP and his mate, the car owner, seem to have taken it upon themselves to try and recover the stolen car.

I'm illiterate as regards trackers and their protocols, but is there any chance that the tracker has been separated from the car ? I would guess that experts in hijacking such cars may well be acquainted with where to find a tracker ?

If the thief could locate the tracker I suspect they'd disconnect it. I can't see any advantage in removing it and keeping it powered up as then it could be traced.

Thanks Avant, for that..I have been a member for more than some others on this website and have seen many backroomers come and go over the last 17 years.

1)The links are from an image sharing website

For those who dont know about image sharing websites

Basically I upload the image and then post a link to the image which is a short link , this is when one posts an image in a forum.

There are other image sharing websites like ibb/imgbb such as Tinypic, postimage and imageshack among others.

2)To clarify, we have "not gone out" trying to recover the car.

However I have heard of others who have gone out and bought another car, only to be told a week later that their stolen car was recovered and so didn't want my friend to end up having two cars hence the reason for trying to understand what our options are
More importantly this information may well be something that could be useful to the car manufacturer to prevent their cars being hacked and stolen in future

Wait until the insurance pays out, then buy a replacement - if the original turns up after that it belongs to the insurer.

Is it possible for spammers to re-use names that have been dormant for a while in an attempt to look genuine.

I have seen on other forums people create a new account using someones existing username with a full stop at the end that no one will notice, its happened to me. I only became aware when I received a warning from the moderator for breaking forum rules and suspending my account for 4 weeks. When the 4 weeks were up I messaged the moderator thanking him for the ban pointing out that it was not me but me with a dot at the end. He then banned me.

Thunderbird,my posts have been made over 17 years and it is not "some spammer"
Unless I have been unintentionally bodily cloned.:)
Who knows even that be possible what with the way technology has advanced :)

Not being an expert, but surely the insurers must have a big interest to get Landrover to pull their fingers out? Have you explained to the insurers that the tracker is working, that you have paid for this service, but Landrover are not helping? The bigger insurers do have quite a lot of industrial influence, and I'd have thought they'd be on the phone to someone important in Landrover reasonably fast.

It's quite possible the tracker has been found, removed and lobbed into the back of someone else's truck.

Of course, but I was commenting about the seeming lack of assistance from Landrover, for a security system the OP's friend is paying them to provide. Insurance companies don't like paying out at the best of times, and possibly offered a reduced insurance premium as the owner had this system, so have a strong incentive to ensure that the tracking service is delivered as it should be.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - sammy1

I always thought that these trackers when activated were able to direct the police to within about 50 yards from the signal. I wonder if Landrover's tracker is palmed out to a third party? If the car has been taken by professional thieves they would be well aware that high value cars may have trackers and if they can clone keys etc then feel sure that they have electronics to detect a tracker. Your car is probably in a thousand pieces in the back of a workshop somewhere or in a container on the dock to move abroad. Seems like a very poor response from the company which will probably leave you out of packet when insurance finally settles.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - thunderbird

but I was commenting about the seeming lack of assistance from Landrover,

Surely its not in Land Rovers interest to be helpful is it. If the car is recovered and returned to the owner what do they get out of it. On the other hand if its never seen again there is a high probability that the owner would buy a new Land Rover.

In a normal world being helpful would actually keep customers happy but as we all know Land Rovers have yet to rise off the bottom of customer satisfaction surveys yet customers flock to buy them. If they can keep selling to unhappy customers why be helpful.

Probably just the old cynic in me rising to the surface again.

Hmm, well i was actually wondering if the reason the tracker wasn't working properly is because Landrover made their own?!

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - DavidGlos
Is the tracking system actually Land Rover’s own?

More likely to be a third party system, which could explain why LR aren’t interested. Your friend presumably has some paperwork for the tracking system as there’s usually an annual fee involved.

I’d have expected the insurer to request details of the tracker and then to have taken the lead in liaising with that company.

Sadly nothing of the sort happened and it would seem rather basic but it looks like they’ are happy to make the payout rather than spend some time actually trying to find out a car that is continuing to be taken around in London as per the daily movement figures reported by the Land Rover app
Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - Avant

Every cloud has a silver lining. Your friend will hopefully have a great opportunity to buy a replacement car that isn't a Land Rover.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Help-Landrover stolen 4d back-Now noted moving-APP - JohnX
Avant ,agree that could be an upside in all this..
Update-The car is still being taken out and driven for short drives but in the last day the distances it is being driven has increased which suggests that the thieves I’ll be coming more brazen know that they have not been rumbled for over a week.

I follow these people on youtube

www.youtube.com/c/AutomatricsMtrack/videos

No doubt they lose some but can't knock the efforts and distances they go to to find customer's cars motorcycles and plant, response from authorities after requests for help (with much of the hard work already done leading to arrests for the bill) can vary.

Maybe someone could point LR's tracking team towards Automatrics to show them how its done.
