Ive been reading about this nice Mazda RX8, and the reports keep refering to it as a 1.3 rotary engine.
So it got me wondering, I know the new ones will be taxed on co2 emissions, but the older ones like the RX7 - would they be classed as a 1.3 on the log book and qualify for the under 1500cc road tax discount?
Just wondered, as I was sat here, bored!

Having had an RX4 at one time I seem to recall that the capacity was classified as double the actual capacity, 2.3 I think, on an argument based on the number of power impulses per revolution; some of us argued that 2-strokes on such a basis should also have the capacity doubled. Perhaps a factor was that rotary cars were by way of being a bit of fun for the capacity, which 2-strokes were not, on the whole!

Regulation 7
The following Schedule shall be inserted after Schedule 1 to the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) Regulations 1984.
SCHEDULE 1A (see regulation 4(10) and Schedule 1)
Dates of Application of Items 25 and 26 of Schedule 1
"PART I
1. In this Schedule?
"EEC type approval certificate" means a certificate issued by a member state of the European Economic Community in accordance with Council Directive 70/220/EEC of 20th March 1970[7] as originally made or with any amendments which have from time to time been made before 5th September 1988;
"engine capacity" means in the case of a reciprocating engine, the nominal swept volume and, in the case of a rotary engine, double the nominal swept volume;
"off-road vehicle" has the meaning given by Annex I to Council Directive 70/156/EEC of 6th February 1970[8] as amended at 5th September 1988;
"relevant authority" means
(a) in relation to an EEC type approval certificate issued by the United Kingdom, the Secretary of State, and
(b) in relation to an EEC type approval certificate issued by any other member state of the European Economic Community, the authority having power under the law of that state to issue that certificate.

Ooh, I don't know. Saab made a 6-cylinder one to go rallying, I seem to recall, and I rather enjoyed driving my old Wartburg a few years ago. Much underrated, IMHO.

HJ's car by car breakdown states it is a 1308cc engine and a twin unit so does that make the total engine capacity 2616cc ?

I once had a Mazda rotary and for road tax, insurance and registration purposes they are listed at twice their actual volumetric capacity.
