I was suppose to be flying to Tenerife on Saturday for a weeks holiday but have decided to cancel. The Corona virus is getting too serious to now ignore. My wife had shingles last year and this reduces your resistance to infection, there is another 70 mph storm moving in on Saturday and a couple of close members of the family have been taken into hospital recently(not Corona!) so we have made the difficult decision not to go on holiday. We will lose the £1200 that i have paid but I feel that it wouldn't be a relaxing time. What would you guys have done in my position?

Yes, it seems at the moment that the 'authorities' are over-reacting to what appears to be a relatively mild bug, with exaggerated effects on global behaviour. Of course the fundamental problem is that there is too much transglobal travel on which this bug (and any others) hitch a ride. I wouldn't like to catch anything nasty while going on holiday, but that could easily happen anyway. Perhaps the unpleasantest consequence might be getting quarantined a long way from home.

My daughter is an junior A&E doctor (junior as in not a consultant). She is working on the CV19 ward.

This is not a normal mild bug for some people. It kills and kills horribly. She has been dealing with a very ill young person today with no underlying health condition. The patient is touch and go and may not survive. Only one visitor is allowed.

At the same time our god - daughter is fighting for her life on the cancer ward. She is not even allowed to see her children because of this mild bug.

STAY IN DOORS.

Corona virus...... - Andrew-T

<< STAY IN DOORS >>

Luckily we have a quarter-acre plot in a small town to ourselves, and we lead a fairly 'isolated' life anyway. But we cannot stay indoors indefinitely. We have not so far joined the stampede to clear local supermarket shelves of anything, and we fail to see how life may depend mainly on large stocks of bog-roll, which is not edible so far as I am aware.

My car is booked to go to a nearby garage tomorrow for a few jobs, and they said on Friday that is still 'on', so it will go unless they cancel (motoring connection).

<< This is not a normal mild bug for some people. >>

Apparently not, but it seems to be for most young people. I am certainly not one of those, but I shall continue to go out when necessary, especially as it is near-impossible to arrange a home delivery now. I shall avoid crowds, keep my distance and trust in good fortune.

Following this topic at a tangent, I was reminded of a contemporary wag at my school in the 1950s (when WW2 was a not-so-distant memory), who left a message in the appropriate small room - Due to shortage of toilet paper, please use both sides

Probably today's shortages do not warrant such extreme steps - yet.

Sorry to hear your news.

Hoe it all turns out well..

My forecasting of confirmed cases weekly is now 2 weeks old and works to within 20%..

It iw now projecting 25,000 cases next week and a total of around 1,100 deaths,

And 150,000 (!!!) the follwoing week and around 6,800 deaths..

Unless social isolation works, we could see millions of cases and up to 200,000 desths.

Half of UK cases are in London (but 20% of the population).

It is going to be - not may be - horrendous in London. The NHS will be unable to cope.

Unless we have a miracle...or several thousand miracles...

I can back up by numbers with several pages of text and claculations if anyone is interested.

We ARE going to make Italy look like a holiday picnic (think London).

And 150,000 (!!!) the follwoing week and around 6,800 deaths..

Continuing your projection, there will be 0.9m the next week and over 5m the week after. Where have you built in a turning point before we run out of bodies to infect ?

Corona virus...... - madf

Well on the basis that the expected death rate = based on those tested and those not tested cases, deaths should be 1% of those infected...

So the quoted rate of 4.5% is high because real cases of the virus are 4 times higher than the reported infections.

At 0.9M infections, the real infected numbers are approx 3.6M and at 5 million, 20 million..

So the virus at those points will be running out of people to infect..

That would be around mid April..

So I would expect a peak of daily infection rates then. Now typically the first phase of a virus outbreak like this "lasts" about 10 -12 weeks after the first 100 infections. which was roughly 1st March. Add 12 weeks and we are talking end May..

But infections and deaths will continue at a reducing rate for weeks afterwards....

see Infection Trajectory: Which Countries are Flattening their COVID-19 Curve? for infection curves...

The trouble is : at present our curve suggests infection rates are accelerating. (London is far bigger than the N Italian cities where the outbreak is...)

So maybe, the peak rate of infections will be end April , flatten for a few weeks and then decline

.

I would have put things into perspective. I understand that more people are contracting influenza and dying from it than coronavirus, as happens every year.

More people die from inffluenza overall as more people have it - but so far coronavirus is killing more people as a percentage of those infected and is more likley to cause breathing difficulties in those people at risk already.

Judging by the business pages this morning(tuesday)--easter holiday(etc) travel decisions are most likely to be made by the airlines cancelling flights.

The worst case scenario therefore being caught out abroad, without a "flight" to return home, or even worse-stuck in a hotel room for a fortnight !

No thanks--

Corona virus...... - gordonbennet

I think you've done the right thing considering the other issues in your family, the problem with this virus is that the incubation period before signs of the illness shows is apparently some 2 weeks, longer than normal incubation/infection period, and reinfection possible doesn't take a genius to work out how many people could be infected in a 2 week period.

Corona virus...... - Zippy123

A difficult one.

I suspect that if you had gone then nothing would probably happen, but as you say, you would be worrying and not enjoy the break (damned if you do, damned if you don't!).

If you haven't actually cancelled yet would it be worth hanging on and seeing what comes about - if the airline cancels the flight or the hotel goes in to quarantine, you might get lucky re a refund.

A lot of people do die from the flu each year but the corona virus does have a relatively high death rate of >1%. In context, 600,000 people in the UK could die if we all caught it. I suspect the death rate in poorer countries has been higher due to the higher incidence of smoking and general pollution which weakens lungs.

Our neighbours are just back from abroad and are now self isolating for 2 weeks. Saw then briefly today over the wall drinking wine and beer in the summer house. Lets hope they stay well.

With regards to hand washing some people will not listen. On Wednesday we took the MIL and her brother to Morrisons probably for the last time for many weeks since she is 93 (and in poor health) and he is 87. After shopping and before we had a snack the wife said to them that they should go and wash their hands. Both refused saying they had never bothered in all those years and were not about to start now.

Wifes uncles view was if he gets it so be it. At that time he still intended to go out shopping every day.

You're not being very understanding here, TB. Those elderly folk lived through WW2 and probably took on board a lot of stoicism, which says to them If my number is up that's just bad luck. They may well have survived the blitz, which was probably scarier than Covid-19. They also probably know they are near the end (relatively) and see little reason to change habits of a lifetime. You could try telling them washing hands might help younger people as well as themselves.

I lived through WW2 myself, but wasn't really old enough to think about it a great deal at the time. My mother reached 102 and was equally fatalistic towards the end of her life.

Living in rural Yorkshire they would not have experienced bombing.

Problem for MIL is her brother makes her fire every morning, gets the coal in and checks on her a few times a day. If he became ill she would be unable to cope and would inevitably would end up in care and that is an experience that would kill her, it nearly did 4 year's ago. If she got the virus it would without doubt be her end.

We cannot make them see sense, they do not appreciate the danger they are putting themselves in.

The wife simply accepts their stupidity is incurable.

My mother (long dead) lived in London in WW2 so experienced bombing and rationing.. It had a profound effect. As a family we never left any food from any meal. I have somewhere a picture of her and my father early 1946 when father returned frrom war in M East (Burmah, Irndia, Iraq, Israel).. They both had no spare flesh on them..

Nope, I won't be apologising. My daughter is being run off her feet as an A&E doctor on a Covid 19 ward in a medium sized south coast hospital.

Colleagues are dropping like flies through exhaustion or sickness themselves. She or some of her work friends may die because they catch this from a patient. Some are already on ventilators themselves.

They do not have proper masks or coveralls despite what the PM is saying. There are no fit masks available.

There are not enough ventilators to go around.

Then you have a***s deliberately damaging ambulances, or spitting or coughing on her and her team whilst they try to incubate a patient.

It's like a war zone and the Govt have cut spending on the NHS in real terms year on year for the last decade.

Everyone that goes out for a social or unnecessary trip should be marked by the police with an indelible "DO NOT TREAT" sign right across their forehead.

Why should my daughter put her health or life on the line for some selfish halfwit!?

I see where you are coming from, Zippy, but your daughter's complaints seem to be directed against the under-resourced NHS, not some elderly individual who - in the final analysis - will make no noticeable difference to her situation, which is reminiscent of a wartime field hospital, but far better equipped than that. Those who enter the nursing profession know they may find themselves in such circumstances and it must be terrifying when it happens.

Just taken the 306 to my regular indie for some overdue but inessential jobs. They seemed to be busier than usual, maybe people are anticipating a full shutdown. They are taking each day as it comes, and they can have the car as long as needed.

Local Morrisons getting busy about 9:30, looking about normal. I'm a bit surprised there aren't face masks and hand-gel on offer at the entrances, but it's a relatively small supermarket in the middle of town. Back into hibernation now ...

I think it's still a bit too soon to decide whether it has been an over-reaction. At bottom it is less about protecting individuals than preventing NHS overload. The bug is a new one, and is similar to winter flu, which has always knocked over a number of frail people in a bad year. The fundamental problem is that after a decade of 'good times' the NHS has been trimmed back until there is too little spare capacity to handle a surge like C-virus. This time, because of a draconian response, the consequences for the economy will last a lot longer than the bug itself - and there will be no spare cash to rebuild the NHS afterwards.

The new bug is not like winter flu - it's a different type of virus.

We won't need to rebuild the NHS as it is not going anywhere - if anything it will be stronger afterward.

The bug is a new one, and is similar to winter flu, which has always knocked over a number of frail people in a bad year.

The last bad year for flu in the UK was 2013 when over 13,000 people died. Did that create a situation like we have today, it certainly did not in fact I cannot remember hit making front page news, we simply got on with life.

That is because Covid-19 and seasonal flu are very different. Covid-19 is much more infectious (if that's the correct wording) for starters and it does not appear to be seasonal (they thought it would be initially with governments predicting it would go away come spring).

This could turn out far worse than any one currently predicts especially if new outbreaks appear after lockdowns have been ended.

America is surely the key at present but with the idiot Trump in charge they have little chance of avoiding a total catastrophe. India with their huge population and limited healthcare will be even worse if it takes hold but at least they appear to be trying to prevent people contact.

To be fair to Trump, the US Democrats are not exactly covering themselves in glory either, holding up the financial assistance package in order (and 1000 pages of extras) to add in 'diversity quotas', climate changes stuff, other woke things nothing to do with the crisis, etc whilst one of their own wants to give money to illegal immigrants.

All the while, Joe Biden mutters incoherently and wanders about, Bernie Sanders looks like another heart attack-in-waiting and the NJ Govenor Cuomo only changed his tune on isolating people and not going to work on public transport (a-la Citizen Khan in London) after stating they were 'safe' because his polling numbers didn't look good. And where's the outbreak hitting worst by far - NY city.

The US is still a nation of mainly self-governed states, unlike the UK, and there's only so much federal help the president can bring to bear. Many of the govenors and other senior local politicians are at least equally to blame, as are the national-level Democratic leadership who look like a spoilt child for not getting their way and acting out of spite.

The important number to watch is the death rate - currently double ours, but with 8x as many cases and 6x the population.

Sorry but that is nonsense. Perhaps he expects more democrats to die in cites rather than Republicans out in the sticks and get re elected by default.

Covid-19 will be more infectious because it hasn't yet met anyone with antibody resistance to it. When some herd immunity has built up things will change. The modellers at ICL are now talking about a death count of 5700, which is a long way short of the earlier guesses.

In stark contrast to his very much brighter and sadly missed brother Christopher, I don't think Peter Hitchens has ever had an original thought in his life. He could have gone on to say that, much like when small pox, TB and polio were rife, we shall have to learn to live with C-19 until we develop an effective vaccine. Thankfully its mortality rate and survivor morbidity is considerably lower than those three - so far.

So I booked at the local ATS instead, which said they would do the oil change but not the MoT (why not wasn't revealed). I rolled up this morning and they refused to use the grade of oil I asked for (and which the car has used for 10 years with no problems) so I called my nearest MoT garage who did the job straight away. All rather strange, but job done in the end. I guess things may get more difficult before getting better.

Sorry to come so late to the party, but here goes. My brother, who is 75, flew to Tenerife on 6th March. he did ask his GP, who said it seemed fine at present. My brother has recently had a procedure to alleviate the symptoms of a cancerous growth in the bile duct with a stent. All successful and now he awaits a course of chemotherapy to cure the problem. This has been going on for some months to get to this point and he really felt in need of a relaxing break. Their November holiday and a christmas one were also cancelled due to ill health so i understand his frustration. Their resort is on the opposite side of the island to the suspected outbreak so he is determined to go and have a break in the sun. He flew back after the week and there have been no subsequent problems. He is now self isolating but luckily, like us, lives in a rural area he is able to dog walk daily for exercise. I must admit I did advise him not to go but he felt differently. As it turns out he was right in this case. Again circumstances alter cases and he made a decision based upon the factors that he felt affected him. You made your decision on the same criteria Graham so I find that very understandable. There was no right or wrong at the time and travel was permitted but decisions have to be made that you are comfortable with. I am sure you feel that you made the right choice for you and your family. Good luck and stay safe.
