Hello all again

Still looking for a second hand car 10 to 12 thousand.and as it's my wife's car for the kid stuff etc reliability is important. I looked at a grand picasso which I liked it had all the practically from a family point of view but with advice from this website and checking out various things I decided it's a bit iffy with regards to mot failures , too many non specific faults with regards to warning lights covering SRS problems, tyre pressure monitor, etc etc etc. A car which seems better and the better half likes is the Honda CRV , not to my liking ,not as practical but more reliable hopefully. However another of my choices would be the ford s max is this any good

I'd take the Honda CRV every time...or the Toyota Rav4.

As this will be your wife’s car, it doesn’t really matter whether or not it is to your liking. If she’s likes then CRV, and it has the space you need, get a CRV. The 1.6 dtec is one of few modern diesels which are free from the typical emissions equipment problems which trouble most. In addition to its reliability, it is also very efficient.

Unless you are some kind of car-nut who enjoys fixing cars at the weekend and trying to diagnose faults then let her buy just about any petrol powered Toyota or Honda that she likes. I hear one or two other Japanese are good (maybe Suzuki?).

Don't go for a diesel unless your wife is going to do a high annual mileage with lots of long trips.

If she wants an SUV, she could add the Suzuki Vitara (1.4T ideally) to the CR-V and RAV-4 on her shortlist: she won't go wrong wtih any of those.

Not I wanted to hear mainly because as nice as the CRV is ,it's not as flexible as mpv and a smaller boot although it just about do , but it's our main car hence the added flexibility would have been nice. I know the above cars are decent just wished there was a good mpv style car with reliability. Having said all that, she likes the Honda ,honda it will be ( probably )

I ran one for 4yrs and can vouch for how practical they are. The 1.6 diesel will do 55mpg easy enough and stick with a pre 2017 model S, SE or SE-T and it’s only £30 to tax. Inside is vast with an enormous boot so I can’t see any family struggling unless you need seven seats.

Look for an approved used example with a full Honda history and make sure you test drive it from stone cold to see if the clutch judders badly. Most of them do it but some seem to avoid it. Sadly it’s classed as a characteristic but is in fact a design fault. It does go away as the car heats up though so hardly a disaster. The 1.6 twin turbo can be had with a good auto box and this combination suits the cars laidback nature well. We’ll be looking at them later in the year.

Just a little something else.

I've just been looking round at crv's and came across something strange , looking at autotrader and honda approved I came across at least 6 cars that had large missing histories in the cars ,not Mots or tax for upto 17 months on one of the cars. This was also cars ranging from 2014 to 2016 at honda approved and local garages . I've never come across this does anyone have any ideas. I'm going to ring one of the Honda dealers tomorrow and find out more .

Cars damaged and repaired over MOTs.

Cars on dealer forecoursts unsold over MOTs.

Cars on SORN

etc

I got a check on a local one and nothing came up no SORN just a gap.i have an app that lets you check basic mot info on cars which is how I noticed the gaps , I've checked lots of cars from different companies and not come across this , then all of a sudden all these Honda's

No doubt you will ask the question if you arrange to see such a car and it will be interesting to hear what they say.

Meantime it may be that these are hire cars being brought in from the Channel Islands. I recall seeing last year that they were proposing introducing MoTs but only at five years old. I don't know what happened.

It will indeed be interesting to hear what they say but remember the 3 golden rules of car buying that has been quoted many time on here:

  1. All salesmen are liars
  2. All salesmen are liars
  3. refer to rules 1 and 2

Honda every time. My old 1999 CRV is still on the road at 250,000+ miles with nothing other than routine servcing. Never once broke down either with me or the new owner.

Whereas Ford................... the company one I had (forced on me) got me on first name terms with the mechanic very soon after delivery - and continued that way until the company agreed to get rid of it as it was impacting my work schedule so badly.

I still run Hondas - on my 4th CRV now and about to buy my 5th

Just remember the CRV can have faults like any other car.

Aircon compressor failed on son's 13 plate, appears to be not unusual but fortunately was under Honda extended warranty, as did a rear wheel bearing, mileage low circa 30k ish, the car was bought by a colleague of mine shortly after, has been completely reliable since and flown through 2 more mots to boot, 2 litre petrol.

These repairs would have totalled some £2k at the main dealer had son been paying, both could have been much cheaper via indy garages.

I remember Quentin Wilson describing Honda spares as 'silk wrapped' in one of the motoring publications.

The few spares I had to buy for the Civic in the six years I had it were very reasonable. Like many Honda owners on here I used Cox spares for OEM parts. The most striking bargain was a battery that despite the car having stop/start was only about £80 delivered.

Servicing was also comparitively cheap - around the same as local indies - less if you take into account that the deal I had included free MOT and breakdown cover. Given that the CRV is a class above the service costs are very reasonable indeed.
