What car to insure with my student loan! - John Basnett
Hi all, i'm off to uni later this year after a year off in which i have worked a bit and dossed around a bit (well you've got to do it if the opportunity arises!) Anyway i have decided to give moving away from home, where i get everything done for me for free, a miss. Instead the student loan money is going to go on insuring a cool car for myself. I currently have a 98 Punto Sporting which i have had since November 2001. This has been a great first car. It is insured in my old mans name to keep the costs down. However when i turn 20 in November i'm going to get a new car and insure it in my own name. I was tempted to go for a 206 Gti but my brother has recently got a 106 and had numerous problems with it so i'm off that idea. I'm now lusting after the Renaultsport clio 172. I reckon that in november i'll be able to get a decent one for around 7k. Insurance will be around the £2500 mark. Does anyone have experience of this car and if so what is it like? Also i am open to suggestions for alternatives. The Imprezza turbo has been considered but would be far too costly to run. What do you guys think??

Shame you didn't insure in your own name from the start as the NCB would have been very nice.

The Clio 172 is excellent but is only £11500 new. If I were looking for a 3-4 year old car, I'd be thinking an early Seat Leon Sport or Cupra, which is a much more mature car but fast and practical and probably similarly priced.

I wish i had gone into my own name sooner! They wanted about £2200 at the time and that was too much for me.

Can't help with your query but also can't resist having a go at your wealth. Politics of envy, you see.

Education, education, education. Or how to put taxpayer subsidised interest-free-student-loans to good use. Can't really complain - as students give all their money back to the treasury through tax on cigs, beer, cars, fuel, road tax, and high IPT on car insurance!

Like they don't know anyway when someone who insured one car for years suddenly insure two cars as main driver with a second driver of their just 18 son!

Don't be offended but I think you have more money than sense! Any exciting/cool car is more likely be stolen or damaged while you are around a university. I know you are living at home but university car parks are a crime magnet, particularly if the university as good road links so criminals can make their quick get away. Stick with the punto sporting for a while or if you want a new car then anyone offering a couple of year's free insurance will save you a fortune. Pick something economical and your loan should cover all the running costs. Have you tried a few quotes with the car of your choice and giving your occupation as student? I know Endsleigh specialise in students but I don't think they are going to be able to work miracles.

An imprezza? At 20? I think it is the same insurance group as your age. Get a poster and wait until you leave university with a few year's ncd :-) A lot of performance cars won't even be quoted for amongst the under 21s or even under 25s so you are on to a loser anyway.

I've got a few sample quotes and the clio comes out at about £2500 for the year. The Imprezza, much to my surprise came out at about the same! You can get insured on any car as long as you are willing to pay. A friend of mine who has had a bit of luck with websites over the last few years has recently bought himself a new M3 convertible and is paying about 14 grand a year to insure it i believe! Another mate had a Nissan Pulsar Gti-r (the fastest thing i have ever been in) and that was about 6k a year third party when he was 18. Unfortunately i haven't got as much cash as those two! Regarding the uni car parks, it is looking more and more likely that i might have to chance the public transport to get to uni as the traffic around birmingham in the morning and evening is horrendous making driving to uni a bad choice. I know i should go down the sensible route and keep mine or get something reasonable to insure and run but what the heck, you're only young (and welcome to interest free loans) once!
