Im looking at purching a saxo VTS, its 1998 R reg but has 97,000 miles on the clock, my friend had it from new, it has a full dealer service history, and loads of motorway miles
Is 97k TO much on a car this young? Its the only thing playing on my mind.

1998 on an R is hardly young! What is the price being discussed and are you buying it from your friend privately?

Parkers quote for a VTR (is that nearly the same?) are £4090 in A1 condition, £3625 for good, £2480 for Fair and £2930 for trade but these figures do not take XS mileage into account.

A VTS has an extra 30 bhp (120 vs 90). I wouldn't normally be put off by miles on a car but Saxos are very fragile in general. If you want a Saxo, it's cheap enough and you know it's been reliable, I don't see why not... but personally I'd be steering well clear from one because all VTSs, almost without exception, will have been thrashed to within an inch of their life. That's what they're for.
Glass's reckons on between £2500-£3000 depending on condition as a p/x value, so don't give too much.

he wants 2.6k for the car, parkers gave the price of 3200 for a private sale of this car WITH the miles. He is only selling it as personal circumstances mean he cant drvie for 3 years and so has no need for a car, he saw this car as his long term car.
It just i have a pug 205 at the moment, its done 106000 and is on its knees, if this car had been cared for then would teh engine last?

Surely the point is that there must be similar cars out there with lower mileages, so unless the price is particularly tempting, keep looking.

had a quick browse around autotrader, a VTS with 115k miles sold for 3000 no problems, so there must be demand for these cars.......

Mileage isn't the only car killer although this is quite a highly stressed 16v engine. At least it's light against that. It should last more than 9k but if you do a big mileage this isn't the car for you.
£2600 isn't a bad price and it's cheaper than anything in AutoTrader but not by so much that you'd be ripping him off.
If you really want a VTS, this is probably as good a deal as you're going to get, as long as you weren't planning to put more than about 8k a year on it.

I think later vtr models have more power, about 105bhp, and the insurance is a lot less for these. VTS only quicker if you really rev it.
When they guy i know came to purchase the car i warned him off. He didnt agree with me at the time but does now- unfortunately he has had three gearboxes in it! Its on a 51 i think. One full rebuild, and a partial rebuild twice. Third gear syncro went twice i think, it he isnt a bad driver. He has had numerous other problems too. You can break into one and get the radio out in about 10 secs. A proper rebuild on one of these boxes will cost a lot. My friend was lucky as it was in warranty, but he is getting shot before this ends. I think you can get a lot better for the money. You could have an r reg 306xsi with 50k at auction for this milleage. At 100k you should be looking to replace the suspension on one of these soon too.
If you must have one of these cars id go for a 106gti with the devent trim.
Just my opinion of course.

security isnt a problem, already got a clifford concept 100 lined up with air horns, also i would have a cd player with removable face plate.

I cant see what all that noise is going to do- you can pop the door on one of these with a screw driver. There are better hot hatches for the money.

I suppose if you sell as many VTRs and VTSs as Citroen have then statistically quite a few will have problems, but many more won't. Incidentally it's enlightening to read the ads in Auto Trader for hot Saxos. An awful lot are 'damaged/repaired'. Says much about how they are treated. Best to go for the lowest possible mileage - they'll have suffered less abuse.

True. I just dont know anyone who has had one that hasnt had problems.
