would anyone care to pass any comments on this engine? i'm currently thinking of getting a mondeo with this engine and am wondering if anyone has a good or bad story to report.
cheers

I had one on a 24 hour test drive - fantastic, almost as much fun as the V6 but with economy as well. The only down side was that it was a bit on the noisy side - even for a diesel.

My advice is to wait for the new engine. This is a stopgap based on the old Ford diesel that dates back to the 1.6 in the Fiesta.

i thought the mondeo engine was a new design from the transit, only slightly modified for the application.
it's the 16v 2litre diesel engine with direct injection and a garett variable vane turbo.

HJ's right as usual, the current diesel is better that the last Mondeo one but that is not saying much, wait for the new one which cannot be far away, autumn 2001 predicted.

I own a New Mondeo 2.0TDI Zetec Estate, with now 1,000 miles on the clock, the engine suffers from almost a fuel lagg, Ford say from the pump changing from pilot setting to full fuel which occurs around 2,800 rpm. This effect is like my old late grandfathers MkII Escort 1300 automatic changing up a gear.
The engines strength is in 4th and 5th gears, it demonstrates most unlike diesel proformance, making A road overtakes a joy. The engine is noisey at idle as the car is well sound proofed for other noises which makes the engine even more noisy.
Being an estate it is massive load carrier must be one of the largest.
The door mirrors are of the small size.
Ford Technical department are working on the problem regarding the engine.
Bristol Street Motors, Birmingham have some good new car bargins at European prices, exstock delivery.
Comments please?

With all due respect to your contact, when the Ford engineer or whoever is telling you about this "its due to going from pilot to full injection", ask him to sit down, then repeat it. His voice should now be muffled as he is talking out of his posterior.
This sudden shift in power is due, surely, to the overboost feature. This allows the turbo to provide extra boost for a short time, 10 seconds IIRC, for such as overtaking maneouvres. So of course it will increase the fuelling as you are pushing more air in during overboost.
Pilot injection is something altogether different, its a very small injection of fuel to start the combustion process before the main injection of fuel. This is done to get rid of the direct injection rattle as evidenced by those DI diesel motors without pilot injection, eg Montego, Vectra to name but two.

I have a new Mondeo 2.0 TD Ghia estate and I seem to be suffering with flat spots. Two ford Garages have told me it's turbo lag but I find that hard to believe when these flat spots occur intermitently and at different revs. Surely a turbo cuts in at a predetermined number of revoloutions?

Hi Raph,
I was beginning to think I was the only one with this problem, symptoms:-
Say driving in traffic staying in 2nd gear and get to the magical 2,800 to 3,000 rpm mark and then engine power drops, then picks up falters etc.., then accelerating in third you get to the 2,800-3,000 mark the engine blips, very erratic going up and down though 1,2 and 3rd gears in normal driving but when you get to 4 and 5th then engine has phenomenal torque and power, which allows you to play 'leave 2 litre petrol cars struggling on hills in 5th game' as I had a 2 litre Peugeot 406, this would definitely be blown it to the weeds with this car. To the problem in hand, Ford definitely need to address this problem as I cannot believe we are the only ones with this problem but think there are very few Mondeo diesels on the road due to every one waiting for the new style registration. I am waiting to hear this week Ford's resolution to my Mondeo problem.
