Car ownership change - Disgraceful shameful DVLA scam - John F

Being aware of the 'two months tax for one month's ownership' scam which we are attempting to avoid, on 31st Oct went online to change Focus ownership from MrsF to son, who was temporarily with us until he found somewhere to live. New V5C arrived today so went on line to retax. Told '....expired on 1st Oct... (a lie - it was taxed for a year in Aug) ....can apply from 1Nov but it is an offence to be the keeper of a vehicle that is untaxed and does not have a SORN..... DVLA's enforcement section may be in contact with you regarding this gap in tax (my bold).

We lie awake awaiting a 4 am knock at the door by black clad goons. I'll keep you posted on how much tax is reimbursed. Yes, I know it's only a matter of £25 or so, but it's the thoroughly underhand unBritish behaviour that rankles.

Yes its legalised cheating of the public. There is no reason with a computerised system that tax cannot be calculated on a daily basis and changeover then would be only a day of double charges.

I know it's been debated a lot over the years and I don't think there is any way to avoid unless you SORN and unSORN at least one day later.

You may need to chuck in a free oil change as a sweetener.

Only if the sentence is for more than 5 years though.

It can wait. It's just had a 5yrly oil change three months ago. Anyway, I shall hopefully be out early for good behaviour.

It may be possible but for whatever reason it's not been done that way. At most rates of VED, at least during era when CO2 was determining factor, the daily rate is nugatory. If John has £25 at stake then the Focus must be quite expensive on VED.

The rules are that cars must be continually either taxed or SORN. If there's a gap then DVLA can enforce but they may do this via administrative fines rather than prosecution - cost may mount up.

Change needs to wait until we have MPs again at which time a writing campaign could be launched.

>> to change Focus ownership from MrsF to son

Strictly, you only changed the registered keeper.

>> expired on 1st Oct

Yep, that's the way the system works. Despite the new keeper getting only a few hours of the 31st Oct, he is expected to tax it for the whole month.

I agree that it is not ideal! The only way seems to be to temporarily SORN the car.

I recently sold a car to a relative on August 30th, and he taxed it on Sept. 2nd. The scenario was that the car was trailered to him over the weekend. All OK I thought. I should have done it online, because DVLA doesn't allow for time in postal transit, they calculate from date of arrival of form, which naturally was September in our case.

So you may as well put any date-of-sale you like on the V5 when you send it in.

Done this twice in the past 3 years with no difficulty at all.

First time we acquired a car from a family member. It was about the 8th of the month thus when they were refunded the VED they lost about 22 days. When we taxed it we lost about 8 days. DVLA gained a months VED.

When we sold the car a year later it was at the very end of the month thus we lost just a couple of days. The buyer would have lost almost a month (if he bothered to tax it I suppose - who knows).

No problem as far as I am concerned. Same rule applies to all except those who change more frequently stand to loose more days.

That's why I did it online - and it's easier. But it doesn't allow you to postdate the date of transfer/sale, so I did it on the 31st Oct. Today Mrs F received a cheque dated 1st Nov for £220-83 which, seeing as she sent £265 in Aug for another year commencing 1Sep means we have actually paid for Sep and Oct, despite them saying it ran out on 1st Oct.

I've got a car with zero road tax, two and a half years old. New equivalent road tax is a few hundred. Maybe I should keep the current one.

I suppose DVLA's thinking is that unless you arrange a sale at exactly midnight, both buyer and seller are owning the vehicle on the day of sale, which clearly requires double VED .....
